Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,877 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,877 m of the 2,790 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 408 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 18 at EVRA Riga International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,478 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 159 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 9 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots at 315 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the tailwind was also 2 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile south of the airport and reaching an altitude of 27,032 feet above sea level. This climb phase covered a distance of 61 nautical miles and took 13 minutes to complete.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered 9 nautical miles. This was followed by another climb phase, which started 6 miles west of Skrunda and took the aircraft to an altitude of 30,847 feet above sea level. The climb phase covered a distance of 30 nautical miles and took 5 minutes to complete.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 56 minutes and covered 338 nautical miles. This phase started 4 miles west of Karosta and took the aircraft over the Baltic Sea. The next significant event was the start of the enroute descent, which began 5 miles south east of Rodbyhavn in Denmark. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 31,433 feet above sea level to 3,912 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 78 nautical miles in 18 minutes.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 10 minutes and covered 20 nautical miles. This phase started overhead Wandsbek in Germany. The next descent phase began overhead Apensen and took the aircraft from an altitude of 3,541 feet above sea level to 2,696 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles in 2 minutes.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 3 minutes and covered 7 nautical miles. This phase started 2 miles south east of Jork in Germany. The final approach to runway 05 at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport began from the south west, with the aircraft heading at 50.0 degrees and at an altitude of 1,265 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 05 was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 134 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 409 meters, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots at 50 degrees. The crosswind was 0 knots, while the headwind was 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,797 meters, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 558 nautical miles, and the flight took 123 minutes to complete. The aircraft used 6,137 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport, achieving a high score of 97.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 50.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,265 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, aligning perfectly with the runway threshold.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was slightly above the target threshold speed, reaching 138 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 409 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. The touchdown speed of 134 knots was a little fast, but the firm touchdown rate of -369 feet per minute (fpm) suggests that the pilot maintained control throughout the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 6°C and a gentle headwind of 7 knots at 50°. The crosswind component was negligible, at 0 knots. The runway length of 2,790 meters was sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance, which was 1,797 meters, or 64% of the runway.
The pilot's performance during the rollout was excellent, with very good alignment on the runway. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, resulting in a high score and a safe touchdown.
