Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,209 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,209 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 353 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The aircraft flown on this occasion was the Kodiak 100. The takeoff procedure started when the aircraft taxied from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. Upon arriving at runway 06 of Richard B Helgeson Airport (KTWM), the departure roll began. The aircraft used 18% of the runway to achieve liftoff at a speed of 78 kt.
The local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 15 °C, wind of 7 kt at 140 °, crosswind of 7 kt, and headwind of 1 kt. Once airborne, the enroute climb started 1 mile northeast of KTWM Airport. The aircraft increased its altitude from 1,813 ft asl to 6,768 ft asl, a total gain of 4,954 ft, in 4 minutes while covering a distance of 9 nm. Following this climb, the enroute level cruise began 9 miles northwest of KTWM Airport and lasted for 11 minutes, covering a distance of 35 nm.
As the aircraft neared its destination, the enroute descent started 1 mile south of Pike Field Virginia (06MN). The aircraft decreased its altitude from 6,746 ft asl to 2,760 ft asl, a total loss of 3,987 ft, in 5 minutes while covering a distance of 15 nm. Upon reaching a certain altitude, the enroute level cruise started 2 miles east of Cook Municipal Airport (KCQM) and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nm.
The final approach to runway 13 at KCQM Airport began from the north-west, heading 134.0° at 2 nm and an altitude of 592 ft above ground level. The landing on runway 13 occurred at a threshold speed that was slightly above the target, at 73 kt. The touchdown distance was 351 m, which was within acceptable limits. However, the touchdown speed of 68 kt was a bit fast, but the touchdown rate was smooth, at -123 fpm.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 5.6 m. The total landing distance of 667 m was 55% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled landing process.
The final stages of the flight consisted of taxiing to the parking from the runway, which took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 66 nm, with an overall flight time of 30 minutes. The aircraft used approximately 70 kg of fuel during the entire journey.
The recent landing of the Kodiak 100 aircraft at Cook Municipal Airport's (KCQM) runway 13 showcased a commendable performance with a final score of 95.7%. The aircraft, approaching from the north-west, navigated at a heading of 134.0°, approximately 2 nautical miles away at an altitude of 592 feet above ground level (agl). This indicated an effective management of altitude and distance, essential for a smooth landing.
Upon touchdown on the 1,209 meter long runway 13, the Kodiak 100 achieved a good threshold height, suggesting that the pilot had sufficient altitude to manage the landing. Although the threshold speed of 73 knots was slightly above the target, this minor deviation did not significantly impact the overall performance. The touchdown distance of approximately 351 meters was within expectations, ensuring that the aircraft did not overextend its stopping distance on the runway.
However, the touchdown speed of 68 knots was a tad fast, necessitating the pilot to exercise caution during the rollout phase. Fortunately, the touchdown rate was smooth, with a descent of -123 feet per minute, which helped maintain control throughout the landing process.
The aircraft landed slightly off-centerline by 5.6 meters, which might have been a result of factors such as wind influence or pilot error. Nonetheless, the pilot's skills were evident in maintaining a very good runway rollout alignment, a testament to their training and experience.
Weather conditions during the landing, which featured a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 7 knots at 140°, provided a moderate headwind that supported the aircraft's descent and touchdown. The absence of any significant crosswind minimized the challenges associated with aligning the aircraft with the runway. Overall, the landing of the Kodiak 100 aircraft at KCQM demonstrated a high degree of proficiency, with some minor areas for improvement identified by the score of 95.7%.
