Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: no landing flap set and off the centreline.
At the 500 ft gate: no landing flap set and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,436 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 673 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Kasonombe Airport in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea, the Kodiak 100 aircraft began its takeoff roll on runway 30. The aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 69 kt, lifting off the ground after a distance of 349 m, which accounted for 76% of the available runway length. The local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 27 °C and a light wind of 1 kt from 206°, resulting in a negligible crosswind component.
As the aircraft climbed away from Kasonombe Airport, it transitioned into an enroute climb phase, ascending from 5,748 ft to 8,677 ft over a distance of 7 nm in 3 minutes. Following a brief level cruise phase, the aircraft began its enroute descent, reducing its altitude from 8,672 ft to 1,021 ft over a distance of 15 nm in 6 minutes. The descent phase was initiated 7 miles northeast of Nadzab Airport, and the aircraft subsequently aligned itself for a final approach to runway 27 from the east. The approach was characterized by a heading of 277.0° at 3 nm and 776 ft above ground level.
The Kodiak 100 touched down on runway 27 at Nadzab Airport, with a touchdown point located 268 m beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 102 kt was slightly excessive, while the touchdown rate of -111 fpm was smooth. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.3 m from the centreline. The aircraft subsequently rolled out along the runway, with a total landing distance of 1,311 m, accounting for 54% of the available runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 12.1 m from the centreline. Following a taxiing period of 1 minute, the aircraft came to rest at the parking area, having completed a total flight distance of 31 nm and consumed 33 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 27 at AYNZ Nadzab Airport was initiated from the east, heading 277.0° at 3 nautical miles and 776 feet above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a threshold height of 59 feet above ground level, slightly above the target. However, the threshold speed was excessively high at 119 knots, indicating a potential for a long rollout.
The aircraft touched down 268 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 102 knots, which was also excessively fast. The touchdown rate was smooth at -111 feet per minute, indicating a controlled descent. Unfortunately, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.3 meters from the centreline, which could have contributed to the long rollout. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 27°C and a light wind of 1 knot at 206°.
The total landing distance was 1,311 meters, accounting for 54% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 12.1 meters from the centreline. Overall, the landing performance was satisfactory, but with room for improvement, resulting in a score of 75.4%.
