Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 500 ft gate: off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,483 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 377 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 04 at Geneva Cointrin International Airport (LSGG). The takeoff distance was 1,011 meters, which accounted for 28% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 5 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot at 0 degrees. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead Ferney-Voltaire in France. The climb phase involved an increase in altitude from 2,308 feet above sea level to 39,522 feet above sea level, a total increase of 37,214 feet, over a distance of 292 nautical miles, and took 40 minutes to complete.
Following the climb phase, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started overhead Tournecoupe in France. This phase lasted for 114 minutes and covered a distance of 862 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started at a latitude of 35.1226159 and a longitude of -13.7977344. The descent phase involved a decrease in altitude from 40,001 feet above sea level to 2,002 feet above sea level, a total decrease of 37,999 feet, over a distance of 201 nautical miles, and took 31 minutes to complete.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 4 miles east of Canical in Madeira, Portugal. This phase lasted for only 3 minutes and covered a distance of 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent phase, which started 3 miles south east of Canico in Madeira, Portugal. The descent phase involved a decrease in altitude from 1,893 feet above sea level to 419 feet above sea level, a total decrease of 1,475 feet, over a distance of 5 nautical miles, and took 2 minutes to complete.
The final approach to runway 05 at Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo (LPMA) was made from the south west, heading 44.0 degrees, at an altitude of 246 feet above ground level and a distance of 1 nautical mile from the runway threshold. The landing was made on runway 05, which had a length of 2,483 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 134 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 377 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 126 knots. The touchdown rate was good at -189 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.4 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots at 339 degrees. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 892 meters, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took only 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,375 nautical miles, and the flight took 197 minutes to complete. The aircraft used a total of 8,498 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo, achieving a score of 99.8%. The final approach to runway 05 was conducted from the southwest, heading 44.0° at 1 nautical mile and 246 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 2,483 meters, with a good threshold height.
The threshold speed was slightly above the target at 134 knots, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal landing speed. However, the touchdown distance of 377 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and stability during the landing. The touchdown speed of 126 knots was a little fast, but the touchdown rate of -189 feet per minute (fpm) was good, suggesting that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of landing smoothly.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.4 meters from the centerline, which may require some adjustments to the aircraft's approach path to improve accuracy. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 2 knots at 339°. The crosswind and headwind components were minimal, at 1 knot each, which contributed to a smooth landing.
The total landing distance of 892 meters was 36% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively to bring the aircraft to a stop. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with only minor deviations from the ideal landing parameters.
