Smooth the climb
Pull to 15 degrees at one rate and you get a clean liftoff, pull to the same 15 degrees at twice the rate and you get an overshoot, a push, and an oscillation through the first few hundred feet. The type-general rule of thumb is a rotation rate of about 2 to 3 degrees per second, which means roughly five to seven seconds from starting the pull to reaching the initial climb attitude of around 15 degrees nose-up. Count it out loud during your next takeoff and you will almost certainly discover you have been rotating in two seconds flat.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 13,188 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,188 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 05 at LPMA Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo. The takeoff distance was 5,195 feet, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 71°F and a wind speed of 10 knots at 180°.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb overhead Machico, Madeira, Portugal, at an altitude of 1,046 feet above sea level. The climb continued to an altitude of 36,308 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,261 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 104 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 75 miles northeast of LPPS Porto Santo Airport Vila Baleira, Madeira, Portugal, and lasted for 152 minutes, covering a distance of 1,036 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started overhead Sainte-Radegonde, Occitanie, France, and descended from an altitude of 36,106 feet above sea level to 2,105 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,002 feet in 28 minutes, covering a distance of 132 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 35L at LFLL Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport was made from the south, heading 355.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,302 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 35L at LFLL Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport was successful, with a touchdown distance of 1,189 feet, which was 26% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 128 knots, but the touchdown rate was good at -180 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect after the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 39°F and a wind speed of 6 knots at 350°. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 6 knots. The total landing distance was 3,470 feet, and the total flight distance was 1,278 nautical miles, taking a total of 213 minutes and using 17,854 pounds of fuel. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport, with a final approach score of 99.8%. The aircraft was approaching runway 35L from the south, heading 355.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,302 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot's control and navigation skills were evident in the precise approach, with a good threshold height and speed of 131 knots at the threshold.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft performed well, with a touchdown distance of 1,189 feet, which is within the acceptable range. However, the touchdown speed of 128 knots was slightly faster than the recommended speed, indicating that the pilot may have needed to apply more braking force upon touchdown. The touchdown rate of -180 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 39°F and a wind speed of 6 knots from 350°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 6 knots, which helped to reduce the landing distance. The total landing distance of 3,470 feet was 26% of the runway length, indicating a safe and controlled landing.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft maintaining its alignment with the runway centerline throughout the rollout phase. This suggests that the pilot's control and braking skills were well-coordinated, allowing for a smooth and controlled deceleration of the aircraft. Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilot demonstrating good control and navigation skills in challenging weather conditions.
