Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,164 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,164 m of the 3,582 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,170 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A350-900 taxied from its parking position to runway 34L at KSLC Salt Lake City International Airport, a movement that required 6 minutes and covered 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 34L, the aircraft accelerated over a takeoff distance of 2,009 m, representing 55 % of the runway length, and achieved a liftoff speed of 156 kt. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 36 °C, wind from 244° at 8 kt, a cross-wind component of 7 kt and a tail-wind component of 3 kt.
The initial climb commenced 1 mile north-west of KSLC, where the airplane rose from 5,155 ft asl to 38,901 ft asl, an altitude gain of 33,746 ft achieved in 39 minutes while covering 304 nm.
Level cruise began 2 miles north-west of Silverton, Colorado, and was sustained for 219 minutes, during which the aircraft traversed 1,813 nm.
A second climb started 3 miles north-west of MHLF Flefil Airport in Honduras, lifting the aircraft from 38,998 ft asl to 40,952 ft asl, a gain of 1,954 ft in 3 minutes and covering 30 nm.
The subsequent cruise segment originated 6 miles north-west of Yuscaran, Honduras, lasting 186 minutes and encompassing 1,535 nm of flight.
Descent began 9 miles north of Huarmey, Peru, with the airplane descending from 40,713 ft asl to 1,317 ft asl, a loss of 39,397 ft in 23 minutes while traveling 136 nm.
For the final approach to runway 16L at SPJC Jorge Chávez International Airport, the aircraft approached from the north-west on a heading of 154.0°, intercepting the glide path at 4 nm and 1,235 ft agl.
Landing on runway 16L was executed on a runway 3,582 m long; the threshold height of 62 ft agl and the threshold speed of 146 kt were both above target. Touchdown occurred 757 m beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 143 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 23 fpm, and the touchdown point was offset 8.7 m from the centreline. Local weather at the time was a temperature of 21 °C, wind from 169° at 12 kt, a cross-wind component of 3 kt and a head-wind component of 12 kt.
The rollout distance measured 2,087 m, equivalent to 58 % of the runway length, and the aircraft’s path after touchdown was misaligned by 9.0 m from the centreline.
In total, the flight covered 3,827 nm, required 478 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 44,063 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A321 entered the final approach to runway 15 at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport from the north-west on a heading of 153.0 °, 4 nm out and 1,280 ft agl. At the 1,000 ft gate the approach was assessed as unstable because the sink rate was too high.
During the threshold and flare phase the aircraft maintained a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 138 kt.
Touchdown occurred 268 m down the runway, a good distance, with a touchdown speed of 134 kt that was a little fast. The touchdown rate was very hard at minus 520 fpm, while runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
Rollout alignment remained perfect and the total landing distance was 2,382 m, representing 65 % of the 3,662 m runway. Local weather was 22 °C with wind 6 kt from 110°, including a 4 kt crosswind and a 4 kt headwind.
The overall score of 96.1 % indicates a strong performance; focus on reducing the excessive sink rate in the final-approach segment and moderating the touchdown rate to avoid hard landings while maintaining the current alignment and distance control.
