Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,193 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,193 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 161 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 26 at EHTE Teuge Airport, where the DA40-XLS aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 364 meters, which is 30% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 60 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 225 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 6 knots and a headwind of 7 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead Teuge in the province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. The climb was rapid, with the aircraft ascending from an altitude of 530 feet above sea level to 658 feet in less than 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile.
The final approach to runway 26 at EHTE Teuge Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading in a direction of 264.0 degrees at an altitude of 100 feet above ground level and a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway threshold. The landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 47 knots and a distance of 160 meters, which is 29% of the runway length. The touchdown rate was excellent at -80 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 240 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, and the total landing distance was 346 meters. The total flight distance was 2 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 4 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 43 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The DA40-XLS aircraft successfully landed at EHTE Teuge Airport, achieving a high score of 99.1%. The final approach was conducted from the east, heading 264.0° at an altitude of 100 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft touched down on runway 26, which has a length of 1,193 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 58 knots. Despite this, the touchdown distance was good at 160 meters, and the touchdown speed of 47 knots was also within acceptable limits.
The touchdown rate of -80 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, demonstrating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots from 240°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance of 346 meters was only 29% of the runway length, indicating a short and controlled rollout. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating a smooth and controlled deceleration of the aircraft after touchdown. Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and touchdown phases.
