Shorten the long landing
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 300 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed, off the runway's 3° glideslope, off the centreline, wings not level and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 545 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 545 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 39 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The 3.00 G arrival is the firm side of smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Vision Jet taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LFBF Toulouse-Francazal (BA 101) Air Base, a distance of less than 1 nautical mile covered in 2 minutes. The departure roll took place on runway 29, with a takeoff distance of 667 meters, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 104 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 18°C temperature and winds of 8 knots at 179 degrees. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the tailwind was 3 knots. The enroute climb started overhead LFBF Toulouse-Francazal (BA 101) Air Base, where the aircraft ascended from 1,537 feet above sea level to 20,900 feet above sea level, an increase of 19,363 feet in 10 minutes, covering a distance of 25 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 1 mile south east of Salvagnac, France. This phase of the flight lasted 31 minutes and covered a distance of 172 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 2 miles north west of Murinais, France, where the aircraft descended from 20,753 feet above sea level to 11,564 feet above sea level, a decrease of 9,189 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 37 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 4 miles south east of Allevard, France, which lasted 3 minutes and covered a distance of 17 nautical miles. The final descent started overhead Meribel, France, where the aircraft descended from 11,118 feet above sea level to 6,754 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,364 feet in 4 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 22 at LFLJ Courchevel Altiport was made from the north east, heading 224.0 degrees at 0 nautical miles and 236 feet above ground level. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 545 meters, and the threshold height was good. However, the threshold speed was excessively high at 111 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 39 meters, but the touchdown speed was excessively fast at 110 knots. The touchdown rate was hard at -440 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.3 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 7°C temperature and winds of 6 knots at 283 degrees, with a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 244 meters, accounting for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The total flight distance was 255 nautical miles, taking 60 minutes, and the aircraft used 49 kilograms of fuel.
The Vision Jet aircraft successfully landed at LFLJ Courchevel Altiport, but there were some areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the north east, heading 224.0° at 0 nm and 236 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 22, which has a length of 545 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 111 knots. This indicates that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to reduce the touchdown speed. The touchdown distance was good at 39 meters, but the touchdown speed was also excessively fast at 110 knots. This resulted in a hard touchdown rate of -440 feet per minute (fpm).
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.3 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or during the flare. The local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 7°C, wind at 6 knots from 283°, and a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 244 meters, which is 45% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot was able to control the aircraft effectively during the flare and touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was very good, showing that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some areas for improvement, particularly in terms of reducing the touchdown speed and improving the alignment with the runway centerline.
