Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,489 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 626 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A319 taxied from the parking area to runway 34 at LFKB Bastia-Poretta Airport, a movement that lasted 5 minutes and covered 1 nm.
Takeoff roll on runway 34 required 1,319 m, representing 52 % of the runway, and the aircraft became airborne at 142 kt. Local weather reported a temperature of 33 °C, wind 3 kt from 119°, a 2 kt crosswind and a 2 kt tailwind.
Climb commenced 1 mile north of LFKB, climbing from 651 ft asl to 35,009 ft asl, an increase of 34,359 ft in 22 minutes while covering 154 nm.
The first cruise segment began 3 miles south of LINN Aviosuperficie Molinella, lasting 20 minutes and covering 157 nm.
Descent started overhead Krtina in Slovenia, descending from 35,013 ft asl to 5,019 ft asl, a decrease of 29,994 ft in 18 minutes over 135 nm.
A brief cruise segment began overhead Wolfsgraben, Austria, lasting 2 minutes and covering 7 nm.
The next descent began 1 mile south-west of Ottakring, Vienna, descending from 4,492 ft asl to 1,793 ft asl, a loss of 2,699 ft in 2 minutes across 8 nm.
Final approach to runway 11 at LOWW Vienna International Airport was executed from the west on a heading of 116.0° at 4 nm and 1,184 ft agl.
Landing on runway 11, which is 3,489 m long, the aircraft touched down 210 m beyond the touchdown zone. Threshold height at 60 ft agl was above target; threshold speed was good at 131 kt and touchdown speed at 123 kt was good. Touchdown rate was minus 210 fpm and runway touchdown alignment was very good. Total landing distance was 1,382 m, representing 40 % of the runway. Local weather reported a temperature of 27 °C, wind 4 kt from 139°, a 1 kt crosswind and a 3 kt headwind.
Runway rollout alignment remained very good.
The Airbus A319 taxied from the runway to the parking area in 1 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
Overall, the flight covered 468 nm, required 72 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 3,362 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A319 entered the final approach to runway 11 at LOWW Vienna International Airport from the west on a heading of 116.0 ° at 4 nm and 1,184 ft agl. The approach was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope and centreline all within limits, and the local weather was 27 °C with wind 4 kt from 139°, a 1 kt cross-wind component and a 3 kt head-wind component.
During the threshold and flare segment the threshold height of 60 ft agl was above target, while the threshold speed of 131 kt was good. The aircraft continued the flare and touched down 210 m beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 123 kt that was good and a touchdown rate described as fair at minus 210 fpm. Runway touchdown alignment was very good.
Touchdown occurred with the aircraft aligned very well on the centreline, confirming the very good runway touchdown alignment noted earlier. The total landing distance measured 1,382 m, representing 40 % of the available runway length.
Rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft remained on the centreline throughout the rollout phase.
The primary refinements should focus on achieving the target threshold height and moderating the flare to reduce the touchdown rate from the fair level observed. Maintaining the current alignment performance while fine-tuning these two items will help sustain the high overall score.
