MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,725 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 61 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the F-35B Lightning II taxiing from the parking area to the runway at EGOV Anglesey Airport, taking approximately 8 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 13, with a takeoff distance of 503 meters, which accounted for 22% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 269 degrees. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 1 knot. After a brief enroute level cruise that lasted less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile, the aircraft began an enroute climb from an altitude of 477 feet above sea level to 3,456 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,979 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles.
The enroute climb was followed by a level cruise that started 3 miles north of Chwilog, Wales, and lasted 3 minutes, covering a distance of 30 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb from an altitude of 4,065 feet above sea level to 4,525 feet above sea level, an increase of 460 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. This climb was initiated overhead Borth, County of Ceredigion, Wales.
The enroute climb was followed by a level cruise that started 2 miles west of Pontrhydfendigaid, County of Ceredigion, Wales, and lasted 3 minutes, covering a distance of 22 nautical miles. The aircraft then began an enroute descent from an altitude of 4,341 feet above sea level to 1,250 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,091 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 21 nautical miles. This descent was initiated 5 miles east of Llangadog, Carmarthenshire, Wales.
The enroute descent was followed by a level cruise that started overhead Taibach, Neath Port Talbot, Wales, and lasted 4 minutes, covering a distance of 15 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 07 at EGDX MOD St Athan from the south west, heading 70.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile and 397 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 07 at EGDX MOD St Athan was characterized by a runway length of 1,725 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was too high at 187 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 65 meters, but the touchdown speed at 184 knots was too fast. The touchdown rate was very hard at -595 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.8 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 131 degrees.
The crosswind component was 2 knots, and the headwind component was 1 knot. The total landing distance was 1,070 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 15.8 meters from the centreline. The total flight distance was 120 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 23 minutes. The aircraft used 2,976 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The F-35B Lightning II aircraft has successfully landed at EGDX MOD St Athan, but with some areas for improvement. The final approach to runway 07 was initiated from the south west, heading 70.0° at 1 nautical mile and 397 feet above ground level. The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, but unfortunately, the threshold speed was too high at 187 knots, indicating that the pilot may have been able to slow down more efficiently before touchdown.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was still too fast at 184 knots, resulting in a very hard touchdown rate of -595 feet per minute. This is a concern as it may have put excessive stress on the aircraft's landing gear and could potentially lead to damage or wear and tear. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.8 meters from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment or a slight crosswind.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 25°C and a gentle wind of 3 knots at 131°. The crosswind was minimal at 2 knots, and the headwind was even weaker at 1 knot. Despite these favorable conditions, the pilot still struggled to maintain a smooth touchdown and alignment.
The total landing distance was 1,070 meters, which is 62% of the runway length. While this is not excessively long, it does indicate that the pilot may have been able to shorten the landing distance with more precise control and a smoother touchdown. Furthermore, the runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 15.8 meters from the centreline, which suggests that the pilot may have had difficulty maintaining control and alignment during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the F-35B Lightning II has successfully landed at EGDX MOD St Athan, there are areas for improvement in terms of speed control, touchdown rate, and alignment. With further training and practice, the pilot should be able to refine their skills and achieve a smoother and more precise landing.
