Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,001 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 561 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 23 at ZYHB Harbin Taiping International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,310 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 157 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of -15 °C, a wind speed of 10 knots at 220°, with a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 10 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Harbin, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile southwest of the airport. The climb took 21 minutes and covered a distance of 130 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,518 feet above sea level to 32,189 feet above sea level, an increase of 30,671 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 45 miles southwest of Hailin, Heilongjiang Sheng, China, and lasted for 78 minutes, covering a distance of 646 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 17 miles south of RJBT Konotori Tajima Airport Toyooka, Hyogo, Japan, and took 20 minutes to descend from 33,333 feet above sea level to 3,257 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,076 feet. The aircraft then began another enroute level cruise 4 miles northwest of Tawaramoto, Nara-ken, Japan, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The final enroute descent started 1 mile east of Yao, Osaka-fu, Japan, and took 4 minutes to descend from 3,235 feet above sea level to 1,314 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,921 feet.
The final approach to runway 32L at RJOO Osaka International Airport was made from the southeast, heading 315.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,264 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 32L, which had a length of 3,001 meters. The threshold height was slightly above the target, and the threshold speed was also slightly above the target at 147 knots. The touchdown point was 142 meters beyond the touchdown zone, but the touchdown speed of 130 knots and the touchdown rate of -167 feet per minute were both good. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 1 °C, a wind speed of 17 knots at 329°, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 17 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,432 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 908 nautical miles, and the flight took 139 minutes, using 5,693 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at RJOO Osaka International Airport, achieving a high score of 96.9%. The final approach to runway 32L was initiated from the south east, with a heading of 315.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,264 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's approach and landing performance were satisfactory, with the threshold height being slightly above the target at 60 feet agl. Additionally, the threshold speed was also slightly above the target at 147 knots. However, the touchdown speed of 130 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -167 feet per minute (fpm) was also good.
The landing was executed with precision, with the touchdown point being 142 meters beyond the touchdown zone. This indicates that the aircraft touched down slightly beyond the designated area, but still within a safe distance. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 1°C and a wind speed of 17 knots from a direction of 329°. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 knots, while the headwind component was 17 knots. These conditions did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing performance of the aircraft.
The total landing distance of 1,432 meters was 48% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing of the Boeing 737-800 at RJOO Osaka International Airport was a successful one, with the aircraft achieving a high score of 96.9%. The precision and control demonstrated by the pilots during the approach and landing phases were evident in the aircraft's performance, and the landing was executed with minimal deviations from the target parameters.
