Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,193 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,193 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 172 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 26 at EHTE Teuge Airport, where the DA40-XLS aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 378 meters, which accounted for 32% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 61 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind of 1 knot at 270 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead Teuge in the province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. The climb was a short and steep one, with the aircraft rising from an altitude of 598 feet above sea level to 625 feet in less than a minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile.
The final approach to runway 26 at EHTE Teuge Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 264.0 degrees at an altitude of 102 feet above ground level and a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was smooth, with the threshold speed being slightly below the target at 66 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 172 meters, and the touchdown speed was also good at 56 knots. The touchdown rate was excellent at -74 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The total landing distance was 410 meters, which accounted for 34% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The total flight distance was 2 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 5 minutes. The aircraft used 29 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The DA40-XLS aircraft successfully landed at EHTE Teuge Airport, achieving a high score of 98.4%. The final approach was conducted from the east, heading 264.0° at an altitude of 102 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft touched down on runway 26, which has a length of 1,193 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 66 knots. Despite this, the touchdown distance of 172 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 56 knots was also within acceptable limits.
The touchdown rate of -74 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, demonstrating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and a slight headwind of 1 knot. The total landing distance of 410 meters was 34% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft maintained its alignment with the runway centerline throughout the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and touchdown phases.
