Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,870 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 980 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 18L at KTUL Tulsa International Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,123 feet, which accounted for 21% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 146 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 63°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270°. The crosswind component was 1 knot, while the headwind component was 0 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile south of KTUL Tulsa International Airport, rising from an altitude of 1,533 feet above sea level to 20,010 feet above sea level, an increase of 18,477 feet, in 9 minutes and covering a distance of 42 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile northeast of 2OK6 Flying N Ranch Airport Meeker, Oklahoma. This phase lasted for 27 minutes and covered a distance of 177 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 2 miles northwest of 71MO Famuliner Farms Airport Wakenda, Missouri, descending from 20,005 feet above sea level to 10,745 feet above sea level, a decrease of 9,260 feet, in 6 minutes and covering a distance of 37 nautical miles.
The aircraft entered another level cruise phase, which started 5 miles northeast of Brookfield, Missouri, and lasted for 11 minutes, covering a distance of 50 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent 5 miles northwest of 4MO2 Newcomb Hereford Ranch Airport Lancaster, Missouri, descending from 9,990 feet above sea level to 2,092 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,898 feet, in 9 minutes and covering a distance of 27 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 31 at KOTM Ottumwa Regional Airport was made from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 316.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,239 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 31, which had a length of 5,870 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed at 101 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 980 feet, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 93 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -258 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 23 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 61°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270°, with a crosswind component of 1 knot and a headwind component of 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 2,104 feet, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 340 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 69 minutes. The aircraft used 2,840 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation successfully landed at KOTM Ottumwa Regional Airport, achieving a score of 97.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southeast, heading 316.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,239 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the runway's length of 5,870 feet and its orientation.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 100 knots, registering at 101 knots. The touchdown distance of 980 feet was within acceptable limits, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown speed of 93 knots was a bit faster than desired, which may have contributed to a slightly higher touchdown rate of -258 feet per minute (fpm). This rate is considered fair, but could be improved upon.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 23 feet, which may have been due to a minor deviation in the pilot's alignment during the final approach. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 61°F and a gentle wind of 1 knot from 270°, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind.
The total landing distance of 2,104 feet was 36% of the runway's length, which is a reasonable figure considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control and stability during the post-landing phase. Overall, the landing was executed safely and efficiently, with only minor deviations from the ideal performance.
