Flight Score
Improve the takeoff
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 906 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 906 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 120 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking to the runway at CYZP Sandspit Airport, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 31 and took off with a takeoff distance of 522 meters, which was 34% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 59 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of CYZP Sandspit Airport, it reached an altitude of 6,329 feet above sea level, an increase of 5,729 feet from the initial altitude of 600 feet. This climb took 10 minutes and covered 20 nautical miles. The local weather conditions at the time were a temperature of 10°C and a wind speed of 20 knots at 249°.
The enroute level cruise started 20 miles north of CYZP Sandspit Airport and lasted 9 minutes, covering 19 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 6,900 feet to 8,398 feet, an increase of 1,498 feet, in 3 minutes and covering 8 nautical miles. The level cruise that followed lasted 22 minutes and covered 50 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began a descent from 8,653 feet to 6,760 feet, a decrease of 1,893 feet, in 3 minutes and covering 8 nautical miles. The level cruise that followed lasted 9 minutes and covered 20 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another descent from 6,359 feet to 4,793 feet, a decrease of 1,566 feet, in 3 minutes and covering 8 nautical miles.
The level cruise that followed lasted 69 minutes and covered 160 nautical miles. The aircraft then began a descent from 4,652 feet to 2,509 feet, a decrease of 2,143 feet, in 7 minutes and covering 14 nautical miles. The level cruise that followed lasted 2 minutes and covered 3 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began a descent from 2,098 feet to 805 feet, a decrease of 1,293 feet, in 3 minutes and covering 5 nautical miles. The level cruise that followed lasted 2 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile. The final approach to runway 06 at PAOH Hoonah Airport was made from the west, heading 80.0° at 3 nautical miles and 915 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 06 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 117 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was 56 knots, which was also good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -205 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The total landing distance was 300 meters, which was 33% of the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 8°C and a wind speed of 4 knots at 77°. The crosswind was 0 knots, and the headwind was 4 knots.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking, which took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 319 nautical miles, and the total flight time was 150 minutes. The aircraft used 80 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at PAOH Hoonah Airport, achieving a score of 99.7%. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 80.0° at 3 nautical miles and 915 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated good control and precision during the approach, ultimately landing on runway 06.
The runway length at PAOH Hoonah Airport is 906 meters, and the threshold height was reported as good. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 63 knots, indicating a minor deviation from the ideal approach speed. Despite this, the touchdown distance of 117 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 56 knots was also within acceptable limits.
The touchdown rate of -205 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have been brought down to the ground more smoothly. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 8°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from 77°. The crosswind component was negligible at 0 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots, which likely contributed to the aircraft's stable approach and landing.
The total landing distance of 300 meters was 33% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, suggesting that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively to bring the aircraft to a stop.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and landing phases. While there were some minor deviations from the ideal approach and landing parameters, the aircraft's performance was generally excellent, and the landing was completed safely and efficiently.
