Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,004 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,266 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a FFX P180, then departed from runway 01 at KSAV Savannah Hilton Head International Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,070 feet, which accounted for 30% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 117 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 83°F and winds of 18 knots at 30°. The crosswind was 9 knots, while the headwind was 16 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb after departing the airport, rising from an initial altitude of 899 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 35,823 feet above sea level. This climb phase covered a distance of 78 nautical miles and took 21 minutes to complete.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 45 minutes and covered a distance of 594 nautical miles. The cruise phase began approximately 2 miles southwest of Holly Hill, South Carolina. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, which began 6 miles northwest of Mattituck, New York. The descent phase took 22 minutes to complete and covered a distance of 70 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 35,287 feet above sea level to 996 feet above sea level.
The final approach to runway 05 at KSFZ North Central State Airport was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading at 23.0° at an altitude of 563 feet above ground level and 1 nautical mile from the runway. The landing was made on runway 05, which had a length of 5,004 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 108 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 1,262 feet, and the touchdown speed was 96 knots, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate was excellent at -77 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 73°F and winds of 9 knots at 0°. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the headwind was 8 knots. The total landing distance was 2,592 feet, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In summary, the flight covered a total distance of 745 nautical miles and took 95 minutes to complete. The aircraft used 1,396 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft, identified as FFX P180 03 01, successfully landed at KSFZ North Central State Airport, achieving a high score of 98.5%. The final approach to runway 05 was conducted from the southwest, with a heading of 23.0° at a distance of 1 nautical mile and an altitude of 563 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with a touchdown speed of 96 kt, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 1,262 ft was also considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The aircraft's touchdown rate of -77 fpm was particularly impressive, demonstrating excellent control and precision during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 73°F and a wind speed of 9 kt at 0°. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 kt and a headwind of 8 kt, which did not appear to significantly impact the landing. The runway length of 5,004 ft was more than sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance, and the threshold height was reported as good.
The pilot's performance during the landing was exemplary, with the threshold speed being slightly below the target of 108 kt. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the rollout alignment was also spot on, indicating a high degree of control and precision during the landing. Overall, the landing was a textbook example of a well-executed and safe approach and landing.
