Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,119 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 349 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Boeing 777-300 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Dubrovnik Ruđer Bošković Airport, taking approximately 6 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 11, with a takeoff distance of 908 meters, which accounted for 29% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 162 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 12°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 70 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was also 1 knot. The enroute climb started overhead Cilipi, Croatia, where the aircraft ascended from 1,513 feet above sea level to 36,293 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,780 feet in 15 minutes, covering a distance of 98 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 3 miles southeast of Slatine, Croatia, and lasted for 120 minutes, covering a distance of 1,016 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 11 miles west of Saint Davids, Wales, and descended from 36,109 feet above sea level to 1,753 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,356 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 110 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 16 at Cork Airport was made from the north, heading 160.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,265 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 16 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 352 meters, which was 61% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was 137 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -200 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.6 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 9°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 170 degrees, with a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 2 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,232 nautical miles, taking 168 minutes, and the aircraft used 19,057 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at Cork Airport, achieving a score of 99.5%. The final approach to runway 16 was conducted from the north, with the aircraft heading 160.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,265 feet above ground level.
The landing was executed with good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for landing. The threshold speed of 140 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the approach. The touchdown distance of 352 meters was also good, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent.
However, the touchdown speed of 137 knots was slightly below the expected range, which may indicate a slightly steeper descent than intended. The touchdown rate of -200 feet per minute was fair, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to improve the rate of descent to achieve a smoother landing.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.6 meters from the centerline, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing path. However, this deviation was relatively minor and did not appear to have a significant impact on the overall landing performance.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 9°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from 170°. The crosswind component was negligible, and the headwind component was 2 knots, which may have helped to stabilize the aircraft during the approach.
The total landing distance of 1,289 meters was 61% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had excellent control over the aircraft's direction and speed during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilot demonstrating good control and management of the aircraft throughout the approach and landing phases. However, there were some minor deviations from the expected performance, which may indicate areas for improvement in future landings.
