Slow down before tight turns
Twenty knots on a monitor produces the visual sensation of about ten. The advice to "taxi at a walking pace" cannot fix this, because your sense of walking pace is exactly the thing that's broken. Put the groundspeed readout in your scan and obey it for the next fifty flights, the way a student pilot leans on the airspeed indicator before learning to read attitude.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,662 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 847 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, then departed from runway 20 at Christchurch International Airport (NZCH) in Christchurch, New Zealand. The takeoff distance was 1,805 meters, which was 55% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 169 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 19°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 239 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 2 knots. After departing from Christchurch, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile southwest of the airport. The climb took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 149 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,166 feet above sea level to 36,335 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,169 feet.
The enroute level cruise started 40 miles north of Haast Aerodrome (NZHT) in Haast, New Zealand, and lasted for 49 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 1,056 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 6 miles south of Callignee in the State of Victoria, Australia. The descent took 18 minutes and covered a distance of 100 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 36,716 feet above sea level to 5,038 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,678 feet.
The aircraft then began another enroute level cruise, which started 4 miles west of Wallan in the State of Victoria, Australia, and lasted for 2 minutes. During this short period, the aircraft covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 2 miles east of Clarkefield in the State of Victoria, Australia. The descent took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 7 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 5,222 feet above sea level to 1,731 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,491 feet.
The final approach to runway 16 at Melbourne International Airport (YMML) was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 172.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,325 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the touchdown point being 424 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 124 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was -197 feet per minute, which was also good. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions were 18°C temperature and a wind speed of 13 knots at 169 degrees.
The crosswind was 0 knots, and the headwind was 13 knots. The total landing distance was 1,294 meters, which was 35% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. After landing, the aircraft took 1 minute to taxi to the parking from the runway, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,328 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 97 minutes. The aircraft used a total of -796 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at Melbourne International Airport (YMML) on runway 16, achieving a high score of 92.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 172.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,325 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 136 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown point was located 424 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, but this is not considered a significant deviation given the overall performance of the landing. The touchdown speed of 124 knots was also within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -197 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a headwind of 13 knots at 169°. The crosswind component was negligible, at 0 knots. The runway length of 3,662 meters was more than sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance of 1,294 meters, which accounted for only 35% of the available runway. This indicates that the pilot had a significant amount of runway remaining to safely stop the aircraft.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, which is a testament to the pilot's skill and control during the landing. Overall, the Airbus A320's landing at Melbourne International Airport was a success, with the aircraft performing well within the acceptable parameters for a safe and controlled touchdown.
