Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
At the 500 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,659 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,659 m of the 3,894 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 562 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 33 at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,374 meters, which is 43% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 5°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at a direction of 40°. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southwest of Langenhorn, Germany. The climb took 24 minutes and covered a distance of 147 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,044 feet above sea level to 35,042 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,997 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, starting overhead Topfstedt, Thuringia, Germany. This phase lasted for 60 minutes and covered a distance of 449 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 4 miles east of Pratovecchio, Toscana, Italy. The descent took 21 minutes and covered a distance of 99 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 35,477 feet above sea level to 5,851 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,625 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting overhead Calcata Nuova, Lazio, Italy. This phase lasted for only 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 1 mile west of LIYA Aviosuperficie La Celsetta Poggio Ellera, Lazio, Italy. The descent took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 14 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 5,459 feet above sea level to 1,339 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,120 feet.
The final approach to runway 16L at LIRF Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport was made from the north, heading 163.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,317 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 16L, which has a length of 3,894 meters. The threshold height at 58 feet above ground level was slightly above the target, and the threshold speed was also slightly above the target at 137 knots.
The touchdown point was 145 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 127 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -251 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 7°C, with a wind speed of 1 knot at a direction of 90°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 0 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,578 meters, which is 41% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 724 nautical miles, and the flight took 131 minutes. The aircraft used 5,806 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at LIRF Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, achieving a score of 96.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 163.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,317 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was conducted with a slight deviation in terms of altitude, as the threshold height was slightly above the target at 58 feet agl.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 16L, which has a length of 3,894 meters. The touchdown point was located 145 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 127 knots was slightly above the target, suggesting that the aircraft may have been slightly fast during the landing. However, the touchdown rate of -251 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, indicating a relatively smooth descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 7°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 90°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component of 1 knot and a headwind of 0 knots. The runway touchdown alignment was deemed very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,578 meters was equivalent to 41% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft maintained a stable and controlled trajectory during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score of 96.2% despite some minor deviations from the target parameters.
