Fixing the bounce
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 500 ft gate: no landing flap set.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,224 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,224 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 269 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Pitts Special departed EDFB Reichelsheim Airfield from runway 18, achieving liftoff after a takeoff roll of 173 m, which represented 14 % of the available runway. The aircraft left the ground at 44 kt. Ambient conditions were 36 °C with a wind from 181° at 6 kt; the wind component was a 6 kt headwind and there was no cross-wind.
Climb commenced directly overhead EDFB Reichelsheim Airfield, where the aeroplane rose from 555 ft asl to 2,170 ft asl, a gain of 1,614 ft. This altitude increase was attained in 3 minutes while covering a distance of 6 nm.
Descent began 2 miles west of Glauburg, during which the aircraft descended from 2,169 ft asl to 865 ft asl, a loss of 1,304 ft. The descent was completed in 2 minutes over a track of 5 nm.
For the final approach the aircraft was aligned with runway 18 at EDFB Reichelsheim Airfield, approaching from the north on a heading of 177.0° at 1 nm and 458 ft agl.
Landing was executed on runway 18, whose total length is 1,227 m. The threshold speed was recorded at 76 kt. Touchdown occurred 270 m down the runway at a speed of 61 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 256 fpm. The touchdown point was offset 7.8 m from the centreline. Weather at the time was 36 °C with a wind from 181° at 7 kt, providing a 7 kt headwind and no cross-wind. The total landing distance measured 586 m, equivalent to 48 % of the runway.
During rollout the aircraft remained slightly off the centreline, with a final alignment deviation of 9.5 m. Braking and deceleration were completed within the remaining runway length.
In total the flight covered 12 nm, required 7 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 3 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 18 at EDFB Reichelsheim Airfield was conducted from the north on a heading of 177.0° at 1 nm and 458 ft agl. Ambient temperature was 36 °C with a wind of 7 kt from 181°, providing a 7 kt headwind and no cross-wind component.
The threshold height was reported as good, while the threshold speed was noted as excessively high at 76 kt.
Touchdown occurred 270 m down the runway, a distance described as good, with a touchdown speed of 61 kt also rated good. The vertical touchdown rate was fair at minus 256 fpm and the touchdown point was misaligned by 7.8 m from the centreline. The total landing distance measured 586 m, representing 48 % of the 1 227 m runway.
During rollout the aircraft remained slightly misaligned, deviating 9.5 m from the centreline.
Reduce the threshold speed toward the appropriate VREF to avoid excess energy on flare, and refine the lateral control to achieve centreline alignment at touchdown and maintain it through rollout. These adjustments will tighten the remaining variances while preserving the overall strong performance reflected by the 87.9 % score.
