Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,626 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,626 m of the 3,806 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 471 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 34R at RJTT Tokyo Haneda International Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,087 meters, which accounted for 70% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 187 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 22°C temperature and winds of 3 knots at 80°. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the tailwind was 1 knot. The enroute climb started 1 mile north of the airport, where the aircraft climbed from 1,052 feet above sea level to 35,425 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,373 feet in 6 minutes and covering a distance of 66 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles southeast of Hokuto, Japan, and lasted for 9 minutes, covering a distance of 197 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb 27 miles north of RJOR Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport, climbing from 35,633 feet to 37,045 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,412 feet in 2 minutes and covering 25 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 25 miles southeast of RJNO Oki Global Geopark Airport and lasted for 27 minutes, covering a distance of 675 nautical miles. As the aircraft approached its destination, it began an enroute descent 31 miles northwest of Longgang, China, descending from 37,381 feet to 16,423 feet above sea level, a decrease of 20,957 feet in 5 minutes and covering 96 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 20 miles southeast of ZTAN Tanggu Airport and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 21 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute descent 12 miles southeast of Dasi, China, descending from 16,060 feet to 3,608 feet above sea level, a decrease of 12,452 feet in 10 minutes and covering 63 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles south of ZZHH Beijing Tongxian Air Base and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent 3 miles west of ZZHH Beijing Tongxian Air Base, descending from 3,303 feet to 1,375 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,928 feet in 3 minutes and covering 9 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 36R at ZBAA Beijing Capital International Airport was made from the south, heading 353.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,267 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown point 57 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 136 knots, which was a little fast, but the touchdown rate was excellent at -92 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions were 13°C temperature and winds of 5 knots at 360°.
The total landing distance was 1,547 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking from the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,170 nautical miles, and the flight took 82 minutes. The aircraft used 24,377 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at ZBAA Beijing Capital International Airport on runway 36R, achieving a high score of 99.9%. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 353.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,267 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a threshold speed of 142 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown speed of 136 knots was slightly faster than ideal. Despite this, the touchdown rate of -92 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The landing distance of 1,547 meters was 41% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline at touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 13°C and a wind speed of 5 knots from 360°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component of 1 knot and a headwind component of 5 knots, which did not significantly impact the landing.
The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft maintained its alignment with the runway centerline during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and precision during the final approach and touchdown phases.
