Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,025 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 2,025 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 411 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, Savage Norden, then departed from runway 09 at KUCA Oneida County Airport. The takeoff distance was 435 feet, which accounted for 8% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 46 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 129 degrees. There was no crosswind or headwind. The aircraft began its enroute climb overhead KUCA Oneida County Airport, Utica, New York, and ascended from 1,763 feet above sea level to 2,485 feet above sea level, an increase of 722 feet in 2 minutes, covering 3 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles north of Whitesboro, New York, and lasted for 62 minutes, covering 123 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile east of KVSF Hartness State Airport, North Springfield, Vermont, and descended from 3,153 feet above sea level to 2,174 feet above sea level, a decrease of 980 feet in 3 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles.
The aircraft entered a right-hand pattern, with a distance of 1 nautical mile covered in 32 seconds. The enroute level cruise then started 1 mile northwest of Claremont, New Hampshire, and lasted for 1 minute, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft began its enroute descent 1 mile north of Claremont and descended from 1,875 feet above sea level to 915 feet above sea level, a decrease of 960 feet in 3 minutes, covering 2 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 11 at KCNH Claremont Municipal Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 93.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile and 373 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 401 feet and a touchdown speed of 31 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was excellent at -68 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as at the time of takeoff, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 183 degrees. There was no crosswind or headwind. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 138 nautical miles, taking 81 minutes, and the aircraft used 87 pounds of fuel.
The aircraft, Savage Norden, successfully completed a landing at KCNH Claremont Municipal Airport, scoring a high 91.4% on its performance. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 93.0° at a distance of 1 nautical mile and an altitude of 373 feet above ground level (agl). This approach was executed with precision, setting the stage for a smooth landing.
Upon landing on runway 11, the aircraft demonstrated good control and stability. The runway length at KCNH Claremont Municipal Airport is 2,025 feet, providing ample space for the aircraft to touch down safely. The threshold height was satisfactory, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable descent and avoid any potential issues with clearance.
However, there were some areas for improvement noted in the landing performance. The threshold speed was excessively high at 31 knots, which is above the recommended speed for a safe landing. This could potentially lead to a longer landing distance and increased wear on the aircraft's landing gear. Additionally, the touchdown speed of 31 knots was a little fast, which may have resulted in a slightly longer touchdown distance.
Despite these minor issues, the aircraft's touchdown distance was good at 401 feet, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control and stability throughout the landing. The touchdown rate was also excellent at -68 feet per minute (fpm), demonstrating a smooth and controlled descent. Furthermore, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 0 knots from 183°. This lack of wind made the landing even smoother and more controlled, as the aircraft was not subject to any crosswind or headwind forces. Overall, the landing performance of the Savage Norden was impressive, with only minor areas for improvement noted.
