Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,207 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,859 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Norwood Memorial Airport, KOWD, which took approximately 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a FFX P180, then departed from runway 28, with a takeoff distance of 2,356 feet, which was 85% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 120 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 36°F, with a wind speed of 20 knots at 279°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 19 knots. The aircraft climbed to an altitude of 19,158 feet above sea level, an increase of 18,125 feet from the initial altitude of 1,033 feet, in 9 minutes and covering a distance of 29 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started approximately 1 mile north of the Bulljump Airport in Wareham, Massachusetts, and lasted for 242 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then climbed to an altitude of 32,078 feet above sea level, an increase of 12,127 feet from the previous altitude of 19,951 feet, in 9 minutes and covering a distance of 31 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise continued, starting 5 miles southeast of Newport, Rhode Island, and lasted for 111 minutes, covering a distance of 873 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 55 miles east of the Cape Canaveral SFS Skid Strip in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and descended from an altitude of 34,659 feet above sea level to 4,928 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,732 feet, in 11 minutes and covering a distance of 102 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again, this time overhead North Palm Beach, Florida, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting overhead Palm Springs, Florida, and descended from an altitude of 4,938 feet above sea level to 260 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,678 feet, in 6 minutes and covering a distance of 17 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 05 at Boca Raton Airport, KBCT, was made from the southwest, with a heading of 44.0° at 1 nautical mile and 241 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 91 knots and a touchdown rate of -164 feet per minute. However, the touchdown point was 538 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 28 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 68°F, with a wind speed of 15 knots at 90°. The crosswind component was 10 knots, while the headwind component was 10 knots. The total landing distance was 3,108 feet, which was 60% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 29 feet from the centerline.
The taxiing from the runway to the parking area took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,068 nautical miles, taking a total of 95 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,329 pounds of fuel.
The aircraft, identified as FFX P180 03 01, successfully landed on runway 05 at KBCT Boca Raton Airport. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 44.0° at 1 nautical mile and 241 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot demonstrated good control and precision throughout the approach, achieving a threshold speed of 115 knots, which is within the acceptable range.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 538 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 91 knots, which is also within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate of -164 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, there was a slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft being 28 feet off the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 68°F and a wind speed of 15 knots at 90°. The crosswind component was 10 knots, while the headwind component was also 10 knots. The total landing distance was 3,108 feet, which is 60% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned, with the aircraft being 29 feet off the centerline.
Overall, the landing was considered good, with the pilot demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and touchdown. However, there were some minor deviations from the ideal touchdown position and runway rollout alignment.
