Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,885 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 338 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A321, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Christchurch International Airport (NZCH). This process took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 02, with the aircraft lifting off after a takeoff distance of 1,960 meters, which was 60% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 166 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 11 knots at a direction of 110 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 10 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northeast of Christchurch International Airport and rising from an altitude of 1,083 feet above sea level to 25,809 feet above sea level, an increase of 24,725 feet in 13 minutes. This climb covered a distance of 66 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 18 miles east of Timaru and lasting 4 minutes, during which it covered 35 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 7 miles northeast of Oamaru Airport and descending from 26,501 feet above sea level to 3,343 feet above sea level, a decrease of 23,158 feet in 16 minutes. This descent covered a distance of 90 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 2 miles northwest of Milton and lasting 2 minutes, during which it covered 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 6 miles north of Milton and descending from 2,818 feet above sea level to 1,285 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,533 feet in 2 minutes. This descent covered a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 03 at Dunedin International Airport (NZDN) was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading at 56.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,266 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 03, which had a length of 1,885 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 147 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 340 meters, but the touchdown speed of 143 knots was a little fast. The touchdown rate was very hard at -551 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at a direction of 345 degrees. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the headwind was 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 1,128 meters, which was 60% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 2 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 210 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 54 minutes. The aircraft used 2,520 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Dunedin International Airport (NZDN) on runway 03, achieving a score of 96.2%. The final approach was conducted from the southwest, heading 56.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,266 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The threshold speed of 147 knots was also satisfactory, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the landing phase. However, the touchdown speed of 143 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have contributed to the hard touchdown rate.
The touchdown rate of -551 feet per minute (fpm) was considered very hard, suggesting that the aircraft may have touched down with a higher than ideal rate of descent. This could be attributed to the pilot's decision to flare the aircraft too late or not enough, resulting in a more abrupt touchdown. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline at touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a light wind of 4 knots from 345°. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot. These conditions contributed to a relatively smooth and stable approach.
The total landing distance of 1,128 meters was 60% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and rolling out without any issues.
