Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,638 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,638 m of the 3,002 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 537 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 26 at LICC Catania-Fontanarossa Airport in Catania, Sicily, Italy. The takeoff distance was 1,394 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 12°C temperature and a wind speed of 6 knots at 230°. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 5 knots. The enroute climb started approximately 1 mile west of the airport and reached an altitude of 33,443 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,338 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 115 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which began 2 miles southeast of San Vito Lo Capo, Sicily, Italy, and lasted for 47 minutes, covering a distance of 336 nautical miles. The aircraft then climbed again, this time from 33,545 feet to 35,137 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,592 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The level cruise phase that followed lasted for 38 minutes, covering a distance of 272 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, starting 1 mile east of Cirat, Spain. The descent from 35,401 feet to 20,801 feet above sea level, a decrease of 14,600 feet in 11 minutes, covered a distance of 70 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 6 minutes, covering a distance of 20 nautical miles.
The final descent phase began 4 miles west of Villar de Domingo Garcia, Spain, and the aircraft descended from 20,423 feet to 3,170 feet above sea level, a decrease of 17,253 feet in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 51 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 32R at LEMD Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport from the southeast, heading 322.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,203 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 32R was successful, with a touchdown point 131 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 141 knots, which was slightly faster than the recommended speed. However, the touchdown rate was excellent at -97 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.8 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 11°C temperature and a wind speed of 6 knots at 40°.
The total landing distance was 1,567 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft took 34 minutes to taxi to the parking area, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 884 nautical miles, and the flight used 6,197 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LEMD Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, with a final approach score of 97.0%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the southeast, heading 322.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,203 feet above ground level.
The landing was executed on runway 32R, which has a length of 3,002 meters. The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. The threshold speed was also satisfactory at 148 knots, demonstrating that the pilot had maintained control and was on track to land safely.
However, there were a few areas for improvement. The touchdown point was 131 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is slightly further down the runway than ideal. Additionally, the touchdown speed was a little fast at 141 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly longer landing distance. On the positive side, the touchdown rate was excellent at -97 feet per minute, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down smoothly and with minimal impact.
The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 6.8 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's approach path. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control and steer the aircraft back onto the centerline after touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 11°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 40°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good control and judgment in executing the approach and landing.
