Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,980 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,674 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 29 at CYYT St. John's International Airport. The takeoff distance was 4,805 feet, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 154 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 52°F and a wind speed of 20 knots at 259°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile west of CYYT St. John's International Airport. The climb took 31 minutes and covered a distance of 168 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,384 feet above sea level to 37,991 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,607 feet. The enroute level cruise started 26 miles east of Burgeo, Newfoundland and Labrador, and lasted for 114 minutes, covering a distance of 674 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 1 mile northwest of Sainte-Madeleine, Quebec, and took 22 minutes to complete, during which the aircraft descended from 37,997 feet above sea level to 1,610 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,387 feet. The descent covered a distance of 104 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 25 at CYOW Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport was made from the northeast, with a heading of 237.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,243 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 25 was successful, with the touchdown point being 308 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 135 knots, but the touchdown rate was good at -197 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 21°F and a wind speed of 4 knots at 210°.
The total landing distance was 4,562 feet, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 954 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 177 minutes. The aircraft used 16,286 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (CYOW) on runway 25. The final approach was initiated from the northeast, heading 237.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,243 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a steady course throughout the approach, ultimately touching down on the runway.
The touchdown point was located 308 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is slightly outside the optimal landing area. However, the touchdown speed of 135 knots was a bit faster than the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have applied a bit more braking or reverse thrust than necessary. Despite this, the touchdown rate of -197 feet per minute (fpm) was within the acceptable range, suggesting that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact smoothly.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 21°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from 210°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the approach. The runway length of 7,980 feet was more than sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance of 4,562 feet, which accounted for 57% of the available runway.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained a steady course and aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline. Similarly, the runway rollout alignment was also perfect, suggesting that the pilot was able to control the aircraft's speed and direction during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft came to a stop within a safe distance from the runway threshold.
