Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,094 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 588 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at San Francisco International Airport (KSFO), taking approximately 8 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 10L, with a takeoff distance of 1,494 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 168 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 17 knots at 190°.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it started its enroute climb 1 mile northeast of Millbrae, California, and ascended from 1,016 feet above sea level to 37,437 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,421 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 154 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise began 2 miles east of Morro Bay, California, and lasted for 9 minutes, covering 73 nautical miles.
The aircraft then started its enroute descent 11 miles north of Montecito, California, and descended from 37,402 feet above sea level to 23,352 feet above sea level, a decrease of 14,050 feet in 4 minutes, covering 36 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise resumed 4 miles southwest of Moorpark, California, and lasted for 4 minutes, covering 35 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued its descent overhead El Segundo, California, and descended from 23,426 feet above sea level to 12,257 feet above sea level, a decrease of 11,169 feet in 7 minutes, covering 41 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise began again 15 miles east of L11 Pebbly Beach Seaplane Base Avalon, California, and lasted for 4 minutes, covering 24 nautical miles.
The final descent started 21 miles west of Encinitas, California, and the aircraft descended from 11,540 feet above sea level to 1,357 feet above sea level, a decrease of 10,183 feet in 7 minutes, covering 25 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 09 at San Diego International Airport (KSAN) from the west, heading 106.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,335 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 09 at KSAN was successful, with the aircraft touching down 154 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was slightly above target at 142 knots, and the touchdown rate was good at -184 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.8 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 13°C, with a wind speed of 7 knots at 310°.
The total landing distance was 1,300 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 5 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 395 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 78 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 3,120 kilograms.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at San Diego International Airport (KSAN) on runway 09, achieving a score of 92.9%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 106.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,335 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was conducted with a slight tailwind of 7 knots, which may have contributed to the aircraft's slightly above-target threshold speed of 142 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 154 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 135 knots was slightly faster than the target speed, but the touchdown rate of -184 feet per minute (fpm) was considered good. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 3.8 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the crosswind or pilot error.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 13°C and a wind speed of 7 knots from 310°. The crosswind component was relatively minor at 3 knots, while the tailwind component was 7 knots. These conditions may have affected the aircraft's performance and alignment during the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,300 meters was 62% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, but there were some minor deviations from the target parameters.
