Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,815 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,815 m of the 1,923 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 969 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KSUN Friedman Memorial Airport. This process took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 13, with the aircraft lifting off after a takeoff distance of 457 meters, which accounted for 26% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 105 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 10 knots blowing from 210 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 9 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northwest of Bellevue, Idaho. During this phase, the aircraft ascended from 6,299 feet above sea level to 40,469 feet, an increase of 34,170 feet, in 11 minutes and covering a distance of 44 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 7 miles west of the 1U0 Bear Trap Airport in Minidoka, Idaho. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 6 miles northeast of the 1U0 Bear Trap Airport. During this phase, the aircraft descended from 40,475 feet to 12,940 feet, a decrease of 27,536 feet, in 23 minutes and covering a distance of 128 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 15 miles northeast of the KJAC Jackson Hole Airport in Jackson, Wyoming. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 12 miles north of the KJAC Jackson Hole Airport. During this phase, the aircraft descended from 12,909 feet to 8,052 feet, a decrease of 4,857 feet, in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 9 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 19 at KJAC Jackson Hole Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 200 degrees at an altitude of 1,625 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing took place on runway 19, which had a length of 1,923 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 99 knots.
The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed was 84 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -118 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.1 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 12 knots blowing from 90 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 12 knots and a tailwind of 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,724 meters, which accounted for 90% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 19.9 meters from the centerline. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 2 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 204 nautical miles, taking 48 minutes, and the aircraft used 479 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation aircraft successfully landed at KJAC Jackson Hole Airport, but with some notable areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 200.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,625 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 19, which has a length of 1,923 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 99 knots. This may indicate a slight deviation from the ideal approach speed, which could be due to various factors such as wind conditions or pilot technique. The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway, which may indicate a slightly high approach speed or a longer-than-ideal landing distance.
The touchdown speed of 84 knots was reported as good, and the touchdown rate of -118 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, indicating a controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.1 meters from the centerline, which may indicate a slight deviation from the ideal approach path.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 6°C and a wind speed of 12 knots at 90°. This resulted in a crosswind of 12 knots and a tailwind of 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,724 meters, which is approximately 90% of the available runway.
During the rollout, the aircraft was misaligned by 19.9 meters from the centerline, which may indicate a slight deviation from the ideal rollout path. Overall, while the landing was successful, there are areas for improvement in terms of approach speed, touchdown point, and rollout alignment.
