Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,985 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 968 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking to the runway, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 26L at London Gatwick Airport (EGKK). The takeoff distance was 1,210 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 177 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 12 knots from a direction of 227 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 6 knots and a headwind of 11 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Charlwood in Surrey, England. The climb took 14 minutes and covered a distance of 83 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,267 feet above sea level to 33,965 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,698 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 16 miles south of Worth Matravers in Dorset, England. This cruise phase lasted for 83 minutes and covered a distance of 638 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 1 mile southwest of Calles in the Comunitat Valenciana region of Spain. The descent took 24 minutes and covered a distance of 76 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 34,568 feet above sea level to 4,529 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,039 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting overhead Monovar in the Comunitat Valenciana region of Spain. This cruise phase lasted for only 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 2 miles southeast of La Romana in the Comunitat Valenciana region of Spain. The descent took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 11 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 4,542 feet above sea level to 1,431 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,111 feet.
The final approach to runway 10 at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (LEAL) was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 100.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,327 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 10, which had a length of 2,985 meters. The threshold height was above the target, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 138 knots.
The touchdown point was 544 meters beyond the touchdown zone, but the touchdown speed of 117 knots was good, and the touchdown rate of -377 feet per minute was firm. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 60 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,355 meters, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft then began its taxiing period from the runway to the parking, taking approximately 2 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 819 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 133 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 4,876 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LEAL Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, achieving an overall score of 88.4%. The final approach to runway 10 was initiated from the west, with a heading of 100.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,327 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the touchdown point located 544 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 117 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -377 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a slight deceleration upon contact with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a gentle wind of 8 knots at a direction of 60°. The crosswind component was minimal at 5 knots, while the headwind component was 6 knots. These conditions contributed to a stable and controlled approach.
The runway length at LEAL Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport is 2,985 meters, providing a sufficient margin for the aircraft to come to a stop. The threshold height at 61 feet agl was above the target, indicating a slight overshoot. However, the threshold speed of 138 knots was slightly above the target, suggesting a slight increase in speed during the final approach.
The total landing distance of 1,355 meters was 45% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting a smooth and controlled deceleration of the aircraft. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft coming to a stop within a safe distance from the runway threshold.
