Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.

Side view — the last 2,024 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,024 m of the 2,494 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 956 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777F, then departed from runway 09 at George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport, KIAH. The takeoff distance was 1,822 meters, which was 60% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 185 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Houston, it began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southwest of Humble, Texas. The climb took 18 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,095 feet above sea level to 30,451 feet, an increase of 29,357 feet. The distance covered during this climb was 117 nautical miles. The local weather at the time was a temperature of 29 degrees Celsius.
After the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 4 miles southwest of Center, Texas. This cruise phase lasted for 182 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 1,426 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time starting 58 miles northwest of Mistissini, Quebec, Canada. The climb took only 2 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 31,385 feet to 33,032 feet, an increase of 1,647 feet. The distance covered during this climb was 13 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 55 miles northwest of Mistissini. This cruise phase lasted for 184 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 1,531 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, starting at a specific latitude and longitude. The climb took 2 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 32,805 feet to 34,687 feet, an increase of 1,883 feet. The distance covered during this climb was 14 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting at a specific latitude and longitude. This cruise phase lasted for 125 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 1,001 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting at a specific latitude and longitude. The descent took 19 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 34,588 feet to 1,124 feet, a decrease of 33,465 feet. The distance covered during this descent was 106 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 18 at Stavanger Airport, Sola, was made from the north, heading 179.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,092 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 18, which had a length of 2,494 meters. The threshold height at 68 feet above ground level was above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 144 knots.
The touchdown point was 541 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 130 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was perfect at -47 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.1 meters from the centerline. The local weather at the time of landing was a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, with a wind of 3 knots at 150 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,945 meters, which was 78% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 12.2 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 4,220 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 547 minutes. The aircraft used 75,826 kilograms of fuel during the
The Boeing 777F aircraft successfully landed at ENZV Stavanger Airport, Sola, with a score of 80.8%. The final approach to runway 18 was initiated from the north, heading 179.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,092 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach speed was within the target range, with a speed of 144 knots at the threshold.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was 130 knots, which was also within the target range. The touchdown rate was perfect, at -47 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown point was 541 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing path.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 150°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots. These conditions likely contributed to the smooth landing.
Despite the successful landing, there were some minor issues with the aircraft's alignment. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.1 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned, by 12.2 meters from the centerline. These deviations may indicate a need for adjustments to the aircraft's approach path or the pilot's technique.
The total landing distance was 1,945 meters, which was 78% of the available runway length. This indicates that the aircraft had sufficient stopping distance and did not require the full length of the runway to come to a stop. Overall, the landing was successful, but there are areas for improvement to achieve a higher score.
