Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,812 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 461 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Heraklion International Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, taking approximately 6 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 27, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 158 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 19°C, with a wind speed of 23 knots at a direction of 279°.
The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Nea Alikarnassos, Crete, Greece. The climb took place from an altitude of 1,090 feet above sea level to 34,666 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,576 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 150 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 56 miles south east of Karpathos, South Aegean, Greece, and lasted for 16 minutes, covering 147 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began its enroute descent, starting 56 miles west of Pegeia, Paphos District, Cyprus. The descent took place from an altitude of 34,766 feet above sea level to 4,031 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,735 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 114 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, this time starting overhead Aradippou, Eparchia Larnakas, Cyprus, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering 8 nautical miles.
The final enroute descent took place overhead CX00 Kingsfield AB Kingsfield, Famagusta District, Cyprus, with the aircraft descending from 3,926 feet above sea level to 1,973 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,953 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, starting 2 miles south east of Xylotymbou, Eparchia Larnakas, Cyprus, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 22 at Larnaca International Airport took place from the north east, with the aircraft heading at 225.0° at an altitude of 1,182 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing took place on runway 22, which had a length of 2,812 meters. The threshold height at 58 feet above ground level was slightly above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 142 knots.
The touchdown point was 46 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 142 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -398 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.4 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17°C, with a wind speed of 11 knots at a direction of 231°.
The total landing distance was 1,266 meters, which was 45% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 10 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 436 nautical miles, taking 82 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,710 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Larnaca International Airport, achieving a score of 93.9%. The final approach to runway 22 was initiated from the north east, heading 225.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,182 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being slightly above the target at 58 feet agl. However, the threshold speed was satisfactory at 142 knots, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown point was located 46 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing spot.
The touchdown speed of 142 knots was slightly faster than desired, resulting in a firm touchdown rate of -398 feet per minute (fpm). This may have been due to the aircraft's speed not being adequately managed during the final approach. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.4 meters from the centerline, which could have been caused by a slight deviation in the aircraft's heading or a miscalculation of the wind conditions.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17°C and a wind speed of 11 knots from 231°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 11 knots, which may have contributed to the aircraft's speed and alignment during the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,266 meters was 45% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft's brakes were effectively applied to bring the aircraft to a stop.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some minor deviations from the desired parameters, including a slightly fast touchdown speed and a misaligned runway touchdown position. Nevertheless, the aircraft's score of 93.9% reflects a high level of proficiency and control during the landing.
