Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,560 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,352 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A319, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, taking approximately 8 minutes to cover a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 22L, with the aircraft lifting off after a takeoff distance of 4,480 feet, which was 56% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 148 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 63°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270°, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind. As the aircraft began its enroute climb, it started 1 mile east of Bensenville, Illinois, and climbed from an altitude of 1,683 feet above sea level to 35,740 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,056 feet, in 23 minutes and covering a distance of 145 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles south of the Maas Airstrip in New Boston, Illinois, and lasted for 129 minutes, covering a distance of 982 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 4 miles north of the Snowflake Airport in Snowflake, Arizona, and descended from an altitude of 36,021 feet above sea level to 2,330 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,691 feet, in 21 minutes and covering a distance of 115 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 26 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 270.0° at an altitude of 1,199 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 10,560 feet, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was also good at 130 knots, and the touchdown distance was 1,353 feet, which was good. The touchdown speed was 122 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -293 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 269°, resulting in a negligible crosswind and a headwind of 1 knot. The total landing distance was 4,656 feet, which was 44% of the runway length.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, taking approximately 3 minutes to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,251 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 187 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 16,840 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX) with a score of 99.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 270.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,199 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft touched down on runway 26, which has a length of 10,560 feet.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed of 130 knots was achieved, indicating a well-executed approach. The touchdown distance of 1,353 feet was also within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 122 knots was good. However, the touchdown rate of -293 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have touched down slightly harder than desired.
Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a light wind of 1 knot from 269°. The crosswind component was negligible, and the headwind component was minimal, contributing to a smooth landing.
The total landing distance of 4,656 feet was 44% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft maintained its alignment with the runway centerline during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, and the aircraft came to a stop safely on the runway.
