Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,644 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 841 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Honda HA420 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KSUU Travis Air Force Base, a process that took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 03R, with a takeoff distance of 2,446 feet, which accounted for 22% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 144 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 63°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 269°. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 1 knot. The aircraft began its enroute climb 2 miles northeast of KSUU Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, California, and ascended from 1,058 feet above sea level to 12,009 feet above sea level, an increase of 10,951 feet, in 6 minutes and covering 23 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles northwest of S74 Lost Isle Seaplane Base, Stockton, California. This phase lasted for 19 minutes and covered a distance of 102 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 3 miles west of E79 Sierra Sky Park Airport, Fresno, California, and involved a descent from 12,004 feet above sea level to 1,583 feet above sea level, a decrease of 10,422 feet, in 9 minutes and covering 37 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 12 at KVIS Visalia Municipal Airport was made from the northwest, with a heading of 135.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,276 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 12 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 837 feet, which was good, and a touchdown speed of 105 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown rate was good at -190 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 24 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 270°. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 1 knot. The total landing distance was 2,222 feet, which accounted for 39% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing from the runway to the parking area took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 169 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 40 minutes. The aircraft used 1,559 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Honda HA420 aircraft successfully landed at KVIS Visalia Municipal Airport, achieving a score of 97.6%. The final approach to runway 12 was initiated from the north-west, with a heading of 135.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,276 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 113 knots, which was slightly above the target threshold speed. However, the touchdown distance of 837 feet was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 105 knots was a little fast, but the touchdown rate of -190 feet per minute was within acceptable limits.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 24 feet, which may require some adjustments in the approach and landing procedures. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 270°. The crosswind and tailwind components were minimal, at 1 knot each.
The total landing distance of 2,222 feet was 39% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control and stability during the landing roll. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft scored well in terms of distance, speed, and alignment.
