Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,571 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,571 m of the 2,131 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 582 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 01 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA). The takeoff distance was 784 meters, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 145 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of -2°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 320°. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was also 2 knots. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the Washington Potomac Washington (District of Columbia, United States) area, known as RB16. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,041 feet above sea level to 26,523 feet above sea level, an increase of 25,482 feet, in 11 minutes and covering a distance of 54 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles south of the Myles Landing Airport (27MD) in Church Hill, Maryland. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 17 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 2 miles east of Cheswold, Delaware, and took the aircraft from an altitude of 27,255 feet above sea level to 283 feet above sea level, a decrease of 26,972 feet, in 25 minutes and covering a distance of 121 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 31 at LaGuardia Airport (KLGA) was made from the southeast, with a heading of 302.0°. The aircraft was at an altitude of 257 feet above ground level and 1 nautical mile from the runway threshold. The landing was made on runway 31, which had a length of 2,131 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 133 knots.
The touchdown point was 163 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 119 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -270 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 4.6 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -2°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 270°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,487 meters, which accounted for 70% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 197 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 46 minutes. The aircraft used 2,090 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LaGuardia Airport's runway 31 with a score of 94.9%. The final approach was initiated from the southeast, heading 302.0° at 1 nautical mile and 257 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft successfully touched down on the runway, with a threshold speed that was slightly below the target at 133 knots.
The touchdown point was located 163 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 119 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a good control of the aircraft's descent. However, the touchdown rate of -270 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have been brought down more smoothly.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.6 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's approach path. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -2°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots from 270°. The crosswind component was relatively minor at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots, which may have contributed to the slight deviation in the touchdown position.
The total landing distance of 1,487 meters was 70% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, and the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, but there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown rate and touchdown position alignment.
