Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,525 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,525 m of the 3,203 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 235 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 18L at EHAM Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The takeoff distance was 1,534 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 168 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 0°C, with a wind speed of 9 knots at 129 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northeast of Aalsmeerderbrug in the Netherlands. The climb took 17 minutes and covered a distance of 109 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 998 feet above sea level to 35,209 feet.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile south of EBCV Chièvres Air Base in Belgium. This phase lasted for 13 minutes and covered a distance of 101 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb phase, this time overhead Villeneuve-sous-Dammartin in France. The climb took only 2 minutes and covered a distance of 17 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 35,224 feet to 36,175 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Thiais in France. This phase lasted for 87 minutes and covered a distance of 676 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 12 miles north of Torrecampo in Spain. The descent took 34 minutes and covered a distance of 124 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 36,265 feet to 1,297 feet.
The final approach to runway 31 at LEMG Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport was made from the southeast, with a heading of 312.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,248 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 237 meters and a touchdown speed of 138 knots. However, the touchdown speed was slightly above the target speed, and the touchdown rate was hard at -453 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 14°C, with a wind speed of 11 knots at 290 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 11 knots. The total landing distance was 1,445 meters, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the taxiing to the parking from the runway took only 5 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,035 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 170 minutes. The aircraft used 6,174 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, achieving a high score of 95.9%. The final approach to runway 31 was conducted from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 312.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,248 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 140 knots, which may have been due to the aircraft's weight or the wind conditions. The touchdown distance of 237 meters was within the acceptable range, demonstrating good control and precision during the landing.
Despite the good touchdown distance, the touchdown speed of 138 knots was a little fast, which may have contributed to the hard touchdown rate of -453 feet per minute. A slightly slower touchdown speed would have likely resulted in a softer touchdown. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 14°C and a wind speed of 11 knots from 290°. The crosswind component was relatively low at 4 knots, while the headwind component was 11 knots, which helped to reduce the landing distance. The total landing distance of 1,445 meters was 45% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll.
During the rollout, the aircraft maintained a very good alignment with the runway centerline, demonstrating excellent control and stability. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, despite a few minor deviations from the ideal landing parameters.
