Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,155 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,155 m of the 3,006 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,081 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 727-200, then departed from runway 31L at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport (LHBP). The takeoff distance was 876 meters, which accounted for 29% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 149 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 18°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 269°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot. After departing from the airport, the enroute climb started 1 mile west of LHBP, where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,470 feet above sea level to 2,176 feet above sea level, an increase of 706 feet in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the enroute level cruise began 1 mile north of LHBP and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 1 mile northwest of Ullo, descending from 2,363 feet above sea level to 1,383 feet above sea level, a decrease of 981 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 31L at LHBP was made from the southeast, heading 311.0° at an altitude of 928 feet above ground level and a distance of 2 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 31L, which had a length of 3,006 meters. The threshold height was significantly above the target, and the threshold speed was also well above the target at 126 knots.
The touchdown point was 627 meters beyond the touchdown zone, but the touchdown speed of 111 knots was good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -119 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.4 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions during landing were a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 3 knots at 224°, with a crosswind component of 3 knots and a headwind component of 0 knots.
The total landing distance was 2,037 meters, which accounted for 68% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 8.2 meters from the centerline. The total flight distance was 17 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 11 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 9,857 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 727-200 aircraft successfully landed at LHBP Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport, with a score of 79.1%. The final approach to runway 31L was initiated from the south east, heading 311.0° at 2 nautical miles and 928 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 3,006 meters.
The threshold height at 96 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly high during the approach. However, the threshold speed of 126 knots was well above the target, suggesting that the aircraft was descending at a relatively high rate. Despite this, the touchdown speed of 111 knots was good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -119 feet per minute (fpm).
The touchdown point was 627 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the intended landing spot. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.4 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 3 knots at 224°.
The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 0 knots. The total landing distance was 2,037 meters, which is 68% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 8.2 meters from the centerline. Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the aircraft was able to touch down safely and come to a stop within a reasonable distance.
