Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,212 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,212 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 639 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 06 at Montauk Airport (KMTP), a Cessna C172 aircraft taking to the skies. The takeoff distance was 336 meters, which accounted for 49% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 59 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 12 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 13 knots from a direction of 160 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 12 knots and a tailwind of 5 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from Montauk Airport, it began its enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 1,769 feet above sea level from an initial height of 339 feet. This climb of 1,430 feet was achieved in just 6 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles. The aircraft then headed towards Westerly State Airport (KWST), where it would make its final approach to runway 07 from the southwest.
The final approach to runway 07 at KWST was made at a heading of 54.0 degrees, 4 nautical miles from the airport, and at an altitude of 1,677 feet above ground level. However, the landing was not without its challenges. The threshold height at 91 feet above ground level was significantly above the target, and the threshold speed was excessively high at 95 knots. As a result, the touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed of 71 knots was also too fast, and the touchdown rate was fair at -286 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.3 meters from the centreline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.4 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 8 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 12 knots from a direction of 170 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 11 knots and a tailwind of 5 knots. The total landing distance was 833 meters, accounting for 69% of the runway.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking just 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 18 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 12 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 6 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft has completed a landing at Westerly State Airport (KWST), with a score of 64.8%. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 54.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,677 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft successfully landed on runway 07, which has a length of 1,212 meters.
However, there were several areas of concern during the landing. The threshold height at 91 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been too high during the approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was excessively high at 95 knots, which could have made it difficult to control the aircraft during the landing. The touchdown point was also very long, using more than 50% of the available runway, and the touchdown speed of 71 knots was too fast.
The touchdown rate of -286 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, but not ideal. Furthermore, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.3 meters from the centerline, which could have made it difficult to control the aircraft during the rollout. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 8°C and winds of 12 knots at 170°, also played a role in the landing. The crosswind was 11 knots, while the tailwind was 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 833 meters, which is 69% of the available runway. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 9.4 meters from the centerline. Overall, while the aircraft was able to land safely, there were several areas of concern that need to be addressed in order to improve the landing performance.
