Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,790 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 463 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 16 at Zürich Airport (LSZH), where the Airbus A319 took off with a takeoff distance of 1,079 meters, which is 33% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 163 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of -0°C, with no wind at all.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it started its enroute climb overhead Rumlang, a town in the Kanton Zurich region of Switzerland. The climb was steep, with the aircraft rising from 2,444 feet above sea level to 37,108 feet in just 17 minutes, covering a distance of 75 nautical miles. This impressive climb was followed by a level cruise that lasted for 160 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 199 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 1 mile south east of Eimen, a town in the Lower Saxony region of Germany. The aircraft descended from 37,096 feet to 23,468 feet in just 11 minutes, covering a distance of 53 nautical miles. This was followed by another level cruise that lasted for 53 minutes, during which the aircraft covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The final descent started 3 miles south of Bergen, another town in the Lower Saxony region of Germany. The aircraft descended from 23,468 feet to 1,281 feet in 26 minutes, covering a distance of 56 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 23 at Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport (EDDH) was made from the north east, with the aircraft heading 230.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,228 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 23 was smooth, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 122 knots and a touchdown rate of -198 feet per minute. The touchdown distance was 465 meters, which is well within the acceptable limits. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 4 minutes to cover a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 390 nautical miles, and the flight lasted for 90 minutes. The aircraft used 3,232 kilograms of fuel during the flight. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 1°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots from 240°. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 4 knots.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport, demonstrating exceptional piloting skills and adherence to standard operating procedures. The aircraft approached the runway from the north east, heading 230.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,228 feet above ground level (agl).
The final approach was executed with precision, with the aircraft maintaining a steady course and speed. The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for landing. The threshold speed of 130 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the critical phases of flight.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft performed well, with a touchdown distance of 465 meters and a speed of 122 knots. The touchdown rate of -198 feet per minute (fpm) was also within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill in aligning the aircraft with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 1°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from 240°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 4 knots, which helped to reduce the aircraft's ground speed and improve the landing performance.
The total landing distance of 1,372 meters was 49% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. This is a testament to the pilot's skill and the aircraft's performance. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft during the critical phases of flight.
Overall, the landing of the Airbus A319 at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport was a textbook example of safe and efficient flight operations. The pilot's skills and the aircraft's performance were well-coordinated, resulting in a smooth and controlled landing.
