Improve the pattern downwind leg
The 45-degrees-behind-the-wing cue assumes you can turn your head and use peripheral vision. Downwind spacing cues like "put the wingtip halfway up the strut" assume a fixed, known eyepoint. Neither survives a monitor unmodified. If you fly on a fixed monitor, stop pretending and fly a numbers-based circuit.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,800 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 220 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Cotswold Airport (EGBP), the Cessna C195 began its takeoff roll on runway 08, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 85 kt in 1,112 meters, which represented 69% of the available runway length. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 16 °C and a gentle tailwind of 1 kt from the west.
As the aircraft entered the right-hand traffic pattern, it demonstrated impressive agility, completing the pattern entry in less than 1 nm in 18 seconds. The subsequent crosswind turn was equally swift, taking just 11 seconds to complete. The pilot's skillful handling of the aircraft allowed for a smooth transition through the pattern, with the downwind turn covering 1 nm at an angle of 80.8 degrees to the runway. The final approach was made from the west, with the aircraft aligning perfectly with the runway threshold at 0 nm and 117 ft above ground level.
The landing was executed flawlessly, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 52 kt and a distance of 219 m, which represented 24% of the available runway length. The touchdown rate was smooth at -129 fpm, and the runway touchdown alignment was excellent. The total landing distance was 390 m, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The flight, which covered a total distance of 4 nm, consumed just 1 kg of fuel and took approximately 3 minutes to complete.
The Cessna C195 touched down smoothly on runway 08 at EGBP Cotswold Airport, showcasing excellent approach quality. The aircraft descended from an altitude of 117 feet above ground level (agl) at 0 nautical miles from the runway threshold, aligning itself with the runway heading of 85.0°. The approach was characterized by a good threshold height, allowing the pilot to maintain a stable and controlled descent.
As the aircraft touched down, it achieved a speed of 52 knots, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 219 meters was also satisfactory, indicating a well-executed landing. The touchdown rate of -129 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft remaining centered on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle tailwind of 1 knot, contributed to a stable and predictable approach.
The Cessna C195 continued to demonstrate excellent control during the rollout phase, maintaining perfect alignment with the runway centerline. The total landing distance of 390 meters, which accounted for only 24% of the runway length, was a testament to the pilot's skill and the aircraft's performance. Overall, the landing was scored at 99.2%, reflecting the high level of proficiency and control displayed throughout the approach, touchdown, and rollout phases.
