Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,801 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,801 m of the 3,056 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,022 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The Airbus A320 then departed from runway 04L at John F. Kennedy International Airport, with a takeoff distance of 1,859 meters, which was 70% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 168 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 19°C temperature and 8-knot headwind at 40°. The crosswind was minimal, at 1 knot. The enroute climb started overhead Springfield Gardens in New York, where the aircraft began its ascent from 1,073 feet above sea level to 36,064 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,991 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 113 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead Cohen Airport in Oxford, Maryland, and lasted for 36 minutes, covering a distance of 259 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent from 35,943 feet above sea level to 1,987 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,956 feet in 29 minutes, covering a distance of 106 nautical miles. The descent started 1 mile south east of Gravely Airport in Martinsville, Virginia.
The final approach to runway 36C at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was made from the south, heading 356.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,238 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 36C, which had a length of 3,056 meters. The threshold height was slightly above the target, and the threshold speed was also slightly above the target at 137 knots.
The touchdown point was 600 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 109 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown rate was very hard at -512 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.8 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 16°C temperature and 5-knot headwind at 360°, with minimal crosswind.
The total landing distance was 1,714 meters, which was 56% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 15.7 meters from the centerline. The aircraft then taxiied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 488 nautical miles, taking 101 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,774 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed on runway 36C at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT) with a score of 82.2%. The final approach was initiated from the south, heading 356.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,238 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 3,056 meters.
The threshold height at 57 feet agl was slightly above the target, indicating a minor deviation in the aircraft's descent. Similarly, the threshold speed of 137 knots was also slightly above the target, suggesting that the aircraft may have been slightly fast during the approach. However, the touchdown speed of 109 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a good control of the aircraft's descent.
The touchdown point was located 600 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the intended landing spot. This may have been due to the aircraft's speed or the pilot's control during the final approach. The touchdown rate of -512 feet per minute (fpm) was very hard, indicating a high rate of descent, which may have contributed to the deviation from the touchdown zone.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.8 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the pilot's control or the aircraft's response to the crosswind. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 5 knots at 360°. The crosswind was negligible, and the headwind was 5 knots, which may have contributed to the aircraft's alignment during the landing.
The total landing distance was 1,714 meters, which is 56% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the approach and landing. However, the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 15.7 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the pilot's control or the aircraft's response to the crosswind.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some deviations from the intended landing spot and alignment. The pilot's control and the aircraft's response to the wind conditions played a significant role in the outcome of the landing.
