Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 305 m and 152 m above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,387 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 478 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 22L at EFHK Helsinki Vantaa Airport, with a takeoff distance of 1,907 meters, which is 60% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 171 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Helsinki Vantaa Airport, it began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southwest of the airport and reaching an altitude of 10,886 meters above sea level. This climb covered a distance of 128 nautical miles and took 21 minutes. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 7 miles southwest of Uulu, Estonia, and lasting 46 minutes, covering 189 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another climb, this time starting 5 miles west of Vilkija, Lithuania, and reaching an altitude of 11,579 meters above sea level. This climb covered a distance of 92 nautical miles and took 3 minutes. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 1 mile northeast of Strēlnieku lidlauks Pilsrundale, Latvia, and lasting 103 minutes, covering 733 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began its descent, starting 1 mile north of Kozarska Dubica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and descending from 11,579 meters above sea level to 3,348 meters above sea level. This descent covered a distance of 83 nautical miles and took 13 minutes. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 4 miles northwest of Drnis, Croatia, and lasting 2 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another descent, starting 4 miles southeast of Skradin, Croatia, and descending from 3,162 meters above sea level to 887 meters above sea level. This descent covered a distance of 25 nautical miles and took 7 minutes. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 8 miles south of Rogoznica, Croatia, and lasting 5 minutes, covering 13 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 05 at LDSP Split Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 53.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 387.4 meters above ground level. The landing was made on runway 05, which has a length of 2,387 meters. The threshold height was above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 142 knots.
The touchdown point was 63 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 135 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was perfect at 0.2 meters per second. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.9 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 1,031 meters, which is 43% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,276 nautical miles, taking 191 minutes, and the aircraft used 8,381 kilograms of fuel.
The aircraft, identified as A21N, successfully landed at LDSP Split Airport, achieving a high score of 94.6%. The final approach to runway 05 was initiated from the south-west, with a heading of 53.0° at an altitude of 387.4 meters above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with a speed of 135 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown point was located 63 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. However, the touchdown speed and rate were both perfect, with a rate of 0.2 meters per second.
The threshold height at 19.8 meters agl was above the target, suggesting that the aircraft may have been slightly higher than desired at the point of touchdown. Nevertheless, the threshold speed was good at 142 knots, indicating a well-controlled approach.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.9 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the rollout phase.
The total landing distance was 1,031 meters, which accounted for 43% of the runway length. This suggests that the aircraft was able to land and stop within a reasonable distance, considering the runway length of 2,387 meters. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and precision during the approach and landing phases.
