Slow down before tight turns
Twenty knots on a monitor produces the visual sensation of about ten. The advice to "taxi at a walking pace" cannot fix this, because your sense of walking pace is exactly the thing that's broken. Put the groundspeed readout in your scan and obey it for the next fifty flights, the way a student pilot leans on the airspeed indicator before learning to read attitude.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,007 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,007 m of the 2,495 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 533 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport, taking approximately 8 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 21, with a takeoff distance of 1,636 meters, which was 66% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 159 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 36°C, with a wind speed of 1 knot at 18°.
As the aircraft climbed out of Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport, it began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southwest of the airport, at an altitude of 1,426 feet above sea level. The aircraft climbed to an altitude of 11,472 feet above sea level, an increase of 10,045 feet, in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 21 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started overhead Ingenheim, France, lasting 2 minutes and covering 10 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time from an altitude of 11,473 feet above sea level to 34,542 feet above sea level, an increase of 23,069 feet, in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 112 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started 1 mile northeast of Hampteau, Belgium, lasting 16 minutes and covering 113 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began its enroute descent, starting 3 miles northwest of De Haan, Belgium, from an altitude of 34,852 feet above sea level to 4,125 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,727 feet, in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 102 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started overhead Tonbridge, England, lasting 2 minutes and covering 6 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 1 mile east of Edenbridge, England, from an altitude of 3,556 feet above sea level to 1,434 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,123 feet, in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 26L at London Gatwick Airport was made from the east, heading 258.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,220 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 26L, which had a length of 2,495 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 150 knots.
The touchdown point was 122 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 142 knots, which was fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -323 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.5 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 30°C, with a wind speed of 8 knots at 195°.
The total landing distance was 1,931 meters, which was 77% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 7 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 378 nautical miles, taking a total of 82 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,039 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed on runway 26L at EGKK London Gatwick Airport, achieving a score of 94.3%. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 258.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,220 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach to the runway was precise, with a good threshold height, indicating a well-executed descent.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was significantly above the target speed of 150 kt, which is a desirable outcome as it allows for a more controlled and stable landing. However, the touchdown point was located 122 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing path. The touchdown speed of 142 kt was also faster than desired, resulting in a firm touchdown rate of -323 feet per minute (fpm).
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.5 meters from the centerline, which may have contributed to the deviation from the intended touchdown zone. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 30°C and a wind speed of 8 kt from 195°. The crosswind component was 8 kt, while the headwind component was 4 kt, which may have affected the aircraft's approach and landing.
Despite the deviations from the ideal landing parameters, the aircraft's runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a high degree of control and stability during the landing phase. The total landing distance of 1,931 meters was 77% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, given the challenging weather conditions.
