Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,158 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,997 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Orlando Sanford International Airport (KSFB), the Boeing 737-MAX8 began its journey down runway 09L, accelerating to liftoff speed of 158 kt in 4,804 ft, which accounted for 48% of the runway's length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 88 °F, with a gentle headwind of 5 kt from a direction of 89 °.
As the aircraft climbed out of KSFB, it transitioned into an enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 13,990 ft asl in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 29 nm. The climb continued, with the aircraft reaching a cruising altitude of 37,002 ft asl over Viera East, Florida. Following a prolonged level cruise of 72 minutes, covering 582 nm, the aircraft began its descent towards Punta Cana International Airport (MDPC). The descent from 36,107 ft asl to 1,317 ft asl took 36 minutes, covering 201 nm. The final approach to runway 09 at MDPC was executed from the west, with the aircraft touching down 654 ft beyond the touchdown zone, at a speed of 136 kt and a smooth touchdown rate of -137 fpm.
The landing distance of 4,525 ft, accounting for 45% of the runway's length, was well within the acceptable parameters. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the taxiing to the parking area took only 5 minutes, covering less than 1 nm. The total flight distance of 951 nm was completed in 149 minutes, with the aircraft consuming 11,067 lbs of fuel. The flight's performance was characterized by a smooth and efficient climb, cruise, and descent, culminating in a successful landing at MDPC.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 touched down on runway 09 at MDPC Punta Cana International Airport with a score of 98.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 84.0° at 4 nm and 1,264 ft above ground level. The final approach was characterized by good quality, with a smooth descent and a threshold height that was well-maintained. The threshold speed was also good, reaching 145 kt as the aircraft crossed the threshold.
The touchdown point was 654 ft beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 136 kt. The touchdown rate was smooth, at -137 fpm, indicating a well-controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft maintaining its centerline alignment throughout the touchdown phase. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 79 °F and a gentle headwind of 3 kt.
The total landing distance was 4,525 ft, which accounted for 45% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft maintaining its centerline alignment throughout the rollout phase. The overall performance of the aircraft was impressive, with a smooth touchdown and a controlled rollout. The landing was a testament to the crew's skill and the aircraft's capabilities.
