Improve the pattern downwind leg
The 45-degrees-behind-the-wing cue assumes you can turn your head and use peripheral vision. Downwind spacing cues like "put the wingtip halfway up the strut" assume a fixed, known eyepoint. Neither survives a monitor unmodified. If you fly on a fixed monitor, stop pretending and fly a numbers-based circuit.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,814 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 558 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 23 at EGPE Inverness Airport. The DA40-XLS aircraft accelerated down the runway, reaching liftoff speed of 68 kt in a relatively short distance of 135 m, which accounted for 7% of the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 15 °C and a gentle wind blowing at 2 kt from a direction of 269 °. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 kt and a headwind of 2 kt.
As the aircraft entered the left-hand pattern, it demonstrated impressive agility, completing the entry in less than 1 nm in just 35 seconds. The subsequent left-hand pattern crosswind was navigated with ease, covering a distance of 1 nm in 43 seconds. The pattern downwind turn was executed at an angle of 45 degrees to the runway, with the aircraft covering a distance of 2 nm. The downwind leg itself lasted for 133 seconds, during which the aircraft maintained a steady course.
The base leg was completed in a swift 27 seconds, followed by a final turn that took just 23 seconds to complete. With the aircraft now aligned with the runway, it began its final approach from the north-east, heading 229.0 ° at an altitude of 116 ft above ground level (agl). The landing on runway 23 was smooth, with the touchdown point located 116 m beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 55 kt was well within the target range, and the touchdown rate of -38 fpm was perfect.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the aircraft's rollout alignment was equally impressive. The total landing distance covered was 835 m, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were identical to those at takeoff, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind blowing at 2 kt from a direction of 270 °. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 kt and a headwind of 2 kt.
In conclusion, the flight was characterized by a smooth and efficient departure, followed by a well-executed pattern and a good landing. The aircraft's performance was impressive, with a total flight distance of 6 nm covered in just 7 minutes, and a fuel consumption of 3 kg.
The DA40-XLS aircraft successfully landed at EGPE Inverness Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its pilot. The final approach was initiated from the north-east, aligning with the runway 23 at a heading of 229.0°. At 0 nm and 116 ft above ground level (agl), the aircraft was in a stable position, ready to touch down on the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft performed well, with a threshold speed that was significantly above the target of 79 kt. This indicates that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent and was able to maintain a safe speed during the approach. The touchdown point was 116 m beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation and does not indicate any significant issues with the landing.
The touchdown speed of 55 kt was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -38 fpm was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot had maintained a stable and aligned approach to the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind speed of 2 kt at 270°. This resulted in a minimal crosswind component of 1 kt and a headwind of 2 kt, which did not pose any significant challenges to the landing.
The total landing distance of 835 m was 46% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot had made effective use of the runway and had maintained a stable and controlled approach to the touchdown point. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control over the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing of the DA40-XLS aircraft at EGPE Inverness Airport was a successful and well-executed maneuver, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its pilot.
