Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,999 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 471 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 02 at Nadi International Airport (NFFN), with a takeoff distance of 1,128 meters, which was 35% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 162 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius and winds of 2 knots at 145 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the tailwind was 1 knot. After departing from Nadi, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport and took the aircraft from 1,051 feet above sea level to 44,238 feet above sea level, an increase of 43,187 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 64 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 46 miles northwest of Mana Island Airport (NFMA) and lasted for 371 minutes, covering a distance of 2,607 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 51 miles south of Kornasoren Airport (WA0K) and took the aircraft from 44,974 feet above sea level to 1,474 feet above sea level, a decrease of 43,500 feet in 27 minutes, covering a distance of 86 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 17 at Rendani Airport (WAUU) was made from the north, heading 178.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,447 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 17, which had a length of 1,999 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was 99 knots. The touchdown point was 91 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 93 knots and an excellent touchdown rate of -86 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and winds of 3 knots at 47 degrees, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a tailwind of 2 knots.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking, which took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 2,766 nautical miles, and the total flight time was 424 minutes. The aircraft used 5,095 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The LH Flight Academy aircraft successfully completed a landing at WAUU Rendani, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in aviation skills. The final approach to runway 17 was executed from the north, with a heading of 178.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,447 feet above ground level (agl). This approach was likely a critical phase of the flight, requiring precise control and navigation to ensure a safe landing.
The aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 93 kt, which was slightly below the threshold speed of 99 kt. This indicates that the pilot was able to maintain control and slow the aircraft down effectively, resulting in a smooth touchdown. The touchdown point was 91 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation and may be considered acceptable in certain circumstances.
The landing distance of 790 meters, which accounts for 40% of the runway length, is a good indication of the aircraft's performance and the pilot's skills. This distance is relatively short, suggesting that the aircraft was able to maintain a high level of control and stability throughout the landing process. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain the aircraft's heading and alignment with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 25°C and a wind speed of 3 kt at 47°. This minimal wind effect would have made the landing process easier and less challenging for the pilot. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 2 kt, which is a relatively minor effect and would not have significantly impacted the landing.
Overall, the LH Flight Academy aircraft's landing at WAUU Rendani was a successful and well-executed maneuver, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in aviation skills. The pilot's ability to maintain control and stability throughout the landing process, combined with the favorable weather conditions, resulted in a smooth and safe touchdown.
