Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,579 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,579 m of the 3,894 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 777 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in the Boeing 737-800 began at Brussels Airport (EBBR) where the aircraft taxied from the parking area to the runway, covering a distance of 2 nm in 10 minutes. The departure roll took place on runway 07R, with a takeoff distance of 1,720 m, representing 56% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 162 kt. The local weather at the time of departure was 20°C with a wind of 3 kt coming from 90° resulting in a crosswind of 1 kt and a headwind of 3 kt.
The enroute climb started over Erps-Kwerps in Flanders, Belgium, with the aircraft climbing from 1,114 ft asl to 35,472 ft asl, covering a total distance of 128 nm in 21 minutes. The level cruise phase began near Helstroff in Grand Est, France, lasting 16 minutes and covering 342 nm.
The descent phase started near Gallicano in Toscana, Italy, with the aircraft descending from 35,712 ft asl to 4,099 ft asl over a distance of 126 nm in 19 minutes. Another brief level cruise phase began near Blera in Lazio, Italy, covering 6 nm in 2 minutes before a short descent from 3,630 ft asl to 3,035 ft asl over 5 nm in 2 minutes near Canale Monterano.
The next level cruise phase started near LIIE Bracciano Air Base Canale Monterano in Lazio, lasting 2 minutes and covering 4 nm. A subsequent descent began near Campo di Volo Sangermano Valcanneto in Lazio, with the aircraft descending from 3,022 ft asl to 1,341 ft asl over 7 nm in 3 minutes.
The final approach to runway 16L at Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (LIRF) was from the north, at 4 nm and 1,257 ft agl, with a slight misalignment from the centreline during touchdown. The landing speed was slightly below target at 130 kt, with a touchdown speed of 121 kt and a fair touchdown rate of -221 fpm. The aircraft touched down 358 m beyond the touchdown zone, with a total landing distance of 1,495 m, representing 38% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway, covering 2 nm in 8 minutes. The total flight distance was 631 nm, taking 83 minutes and consuming 5,024 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LIRF Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport on runway 16L. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 162.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,257 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, which is a crucial aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was slightly below the target threshold speed of 130 knots, registering at 130 kt. The touchdown point was located 358 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 121 kt was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -221 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have maintained a more gradual descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.0 meters from the centerline, which may require some adjustments during the rollout phase. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 28°C and a gentle wind of 4 knots at 56°. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 kt, while the tailwind component was negligible at 1 kt.
The total landing distance of 1,495 meters was 38% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control and stability during the post-landing phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with some minor deviations that can be addressed during future flights.
