Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,635 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,635 m of the 2,486 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 753 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing Geneva Cointrin International Airport (LSGG), the Airbus A321 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the designated runway, a process that took approximately 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. As the aircraft reached the runway threshold, it initiated its departure roll on runway 04, utilizing 1,647 meters, or 46% of the runway's length, to achieve liftoff at a speed of 156 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 21°C, with a gentle tailwind of 3 knots and a crosswind of 1 knot.
As the aircraft climbed to cruising altitude, it began its enroute climb phase, which started overhead Ferney-Voltaire, a town in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region of France. The climb phase saw the aircraft ascend from 2,330 feet above sea level to 16,826 feet, a vertical increase of 14,496 feet, in just 8 minutes and covering a distance of 41 nautical miles. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 7 minutes and covered 50 nautical miles, before beginning its enroute descent phase. The descent phase, which started overhead Zell, a town in the Kanton Luzern region of Switzerland, saw the aircraft descend from 17,018 feet to 2,824 feet, a vertical decrease of 14,193 feet, in 12 minutes and covering 57 nautical miles.
Upon reaching the final approach phase, the aircraft began its descent towards runway 28 at Zürich Airport (LSZH), approaching from the east at a heading of 275.0° and at an altitude of 1,410 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, utilizing 63% of its 2,484-meter length, with a touchdown point located 339 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 132 knots was slightly above the target speed, but the touchdown rate of -128 feet per minute was smooth. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 156 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 36 minutes and a fuel consumption of 1,789 kilograms.
The final approach to runway 28 at LSZH Zürich Airport from the east was executed with good quality, with the aircraft maintaining a steady heading of 275.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,410 feet above ground level. The approach was conducted in a 1 kt headwind, with a negligible crosswind component. The threshold height was satisfactory, allowing for a smooth transition to the landing phase.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 146 kt, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 132 kt. However, the touchdown rate was smooth at -128 fpm, indicating a well-controlled descent. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.8 meters from the centreline, but the rollout alignment was very good, demonstrating good control and coordination during the landing phase.
The total landing distance was 1,556 meters, which accounted for 63% of the runway length. This performance was satisfactory, considering the slightly above-target threshold speed and the fast touchdown speed. Overall, the landing was scored 94.2%, reflecting a good but not exceptional performance. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 12°C and a negligible wind component, contributed to a stable and predictable approach and landing phase.
