Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,194 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 362 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A320, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Gran Canaria Airport (GCLP). This process took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 03L, and the takeoff distance was 1,346 meters, which accounted for 43% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 158 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it encountered local weather conditions of 21°C temperature and a wind speed of 18 knots at 9°. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the headwind was 18 knots. The enroute climb started over the Gran Canaria Airport, where the aircraft ascended from 1,059 feet above sea level to 10,316 feet above sea level, an increase of 9,257 feet in just 4 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 14 miles east of the Gran Canaria Airport and lasted for 19 minutes, covering a distance of 79 nautical miles. The descent started 16 miles south of El Medano, where the aircraft descended from 10,337 feet above sea level to 1,466 feet above sea level, a decrease of 8,871 feet in 15 minutes, covering a distance of 15 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 07 at Tenerife Sur Airport (GCTS) was made from the southwest, heading 68.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,257 feet above ground level. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 3,194 meters, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was also good at 131 knots, and the touchdown distance was 362 meters. The touchdown speed was 122 knots, and the touchdown rate was firm at -323 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.6 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 18°C temperature and a wind speed of 16 knots at 60°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 16 knots. The total landing distance was 1,391 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, taking 4 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 115 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 53 minutes. The aircraft used 1,827 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at GCTS Tenerife Sur Airport, achieving a high score of 98.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 68.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,257 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 131 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 362 meters was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent. The touchdown speed of 122 knots was also within the acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of -323 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a controlled and stable landing.
However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft being 3.6 meters off-centerline. This minor misalignment may have been due to various factors, including wind conditions or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a moderate headwind of 16 knots.
The crosswind component was minimal, at 2 knots, which reduced the risk of a difficult landing. The total landing distance of 1,391 meters was 44% of the runway length, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent and rollout. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot had maintained control over the aircraft's direction and speed during the landing phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot's skills and experience were evident in the high score achieved. However, the minor deviation in the runway touchdown position highlights the importance of maintaining precise control over the aircraft's descent and touchdown.
