Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,043 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 208 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, a Just Flight RJ85 CityJet, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KBOS Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. This took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 33L, with a takeoff distance of 868 meters, which was 31% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 142 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Boston, it encountered local weather conditions of 8°C temperature and a wind of 30 knots at 279°. The crosswind component was 17 knots, while the headwind component was 25 knots. The enroute climb started overhead KBOS, with the aircraft ascending from 1,023 feet above sea level to 14,150 feet, an increase of 13,126 feet in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 47 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its descent, starting 1 mile west of New Boston, New Hampshire, and descending from 14,157 feet to 12,921 feet, a decrease of 1,235 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started overhead Hillsborough, New Hampshire, and lasted 2 minutes, covering 9 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another climb, starting 2 miles north of the Flying Loon Seaplane Base in Nelson, New Hampshire, and ascending from 13,608 feet to 29,590 feet, an increase of 15,982 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 123 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 1 mile west of Little Falls, New York, and lasted 56 minutes, covering 326 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its descent, starting 2 miles northwest of Chris Hadfield Airport in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, and descending from 30,010 feet to 15,487 feet, a decrease of 14,523 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 38 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 3 miles southwest of Attica, Michigan, and lasted 4 minutes, covering 22 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another descent, starting overhead Bishop International Airport in Flint, Michigan, and descending from 14,883 feet to 6,467 feet, a decrease of 8,416 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 30 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 1 mile northeast of the Dow Division Heliport in Midland, Michigan, and lasted 4 minutes, covering 18 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another descent, starting 2 miles northeast of Portland, Michigan, and descending from 6,027 feet to 4,225 feet, a decrease of 1,802 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 1 mile southeast of Ionia County Airport in Ionia, Michigan, and lasted 2 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another descent, starting overhead Saranac, Michigan, and descending from 4,004 feet to 1,893 feet, a decrease of 2,111 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began a climb, starting 2 miles southeast of Lowell, Michigan, and ascending from 1,877 feet to 2,662 feet, an increase of 785 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 26L at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was made from the east, with a heading of 264.0° at 3 nautical miles and 1,819 feet above ground level
The CityJet RJ85 aircraft has successfully landed at KGRR Gerald R. Ford International Airport, scoring 80.9% in the assessment. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 264.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,819 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 26L, which has a length of 3,043 meters.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down with a speed of 177 knots, which was considered excessively high. This resulted in a hard touchdown rate of -536 feet per minute (fpm). The touchdown distance was, however, good at 207 meters. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 5.0 meters, which may have contributed to the hard touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -1°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 270°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 10 knots. The aircraft's landing distance was 902 meters, which is 30% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some areas for improvement, particularly in terms of touchdown speed and rate. The excessively high touchdown speed and hard touchdown rate may have been influenced by the high threshold speed and slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position.
