Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,539 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,539 m of the 2,132 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 368 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The Airbus A320 then departed from runway 24L at LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, a major airport in Spain. The takeoff distance was 1,385 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 152 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 13 knots from a direction of 250 degrees.
The crosswind component was minimal, at just 1 knot, while the headwind component was 13 knots. As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started approximately 1 mile south west of the airport. The climb took 18 minutes to reach a height of 32,505 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,459 feet from the initial altitude of 1,046 feet. During this phase, the aircraft covered a distance of 74 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 5 miles north west of LESU Pirineus - la Seu d'Urgel Airport. This phase lasted for 113 minutes and covered a distance of 737 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 1 mile south east of Tebay in Cumbria, England. The descent took 24 minutes to reach a height of 1,390 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,356 feet from the initial altitude of 31,746 feet. During this phase, the aircraft covered a distance of 98 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 24 at EGPH Edinburgh Airport was made from the north east, with the aircraft heading 239.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,270 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 24, which had a length of 2,132 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 2 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 220 degrees. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 10 knots.
The touchdown speed was 134 knots, which was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown distance was 369 meters, which was also within the acceptable range. However, the touchdown rate was slightly higher than ideal, at -283 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also very good. The total landing distance was 1,456 meters, which accounted for 68% of the runway.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 918 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 177 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 6,259 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed on runway 24 at Edinburgh Airport (EGPH) with a score of 96.5%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north east, heading 239.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,270 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 137 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 369 meters was also good, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft during the landing phase. The touchdown speed of 134 knots was also within the acceptable range, further emphasizing the pilot's skill and control.
However, the touchdown rate of -283 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair. A higher touchdown rate can be a concern as it may indicate a harder landing, which can put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and potentially cause damage. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, which suggests that the pilot had maintained a stable and controlled approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 2°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from 220°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 10 knots. These conditions were favorable for the landing, and the pilot was able to maintain a stable approach despite the wind.
The total landing distance of 1,456 meters was 68% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilot had maintained a high level of control over the aircraft during the landing phase and had made a smooth and efficient touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained a stable and controlled rollout after touchdown.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilot demonstrating a high level of skill and control throughout the approach and landing phase. The score of 96.5% reflects the pilot's ability to navigate the aircraft safely and efficiently in a variety of conditions.
