Improve the rollout
A crosswind landing is a geometry problem. The air mass you're flying in is moving sideways across the runway, and you need your ground track down the centreline with your wheels aligned to it at the moment of contact. There are two techniques that will help, the crab and the sideslip.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 853 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 853 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 400 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 05 at EDWL Langeoog Airport, a small airfield located on the island of Langeoog in Lower Saxony, Germany. The Cessna Skyhawk aircraft accelerated down the runway, covering a distance of 39 meters before lifting off into the air. The liftoff speed was a relatively modest 70 knots, which is typical for a small aircraft like the Cessna Skyhawk.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airfield, it encountered a local weather pattern characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 12 knots from a direction of 329 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind component of 12 knots and a headwind component of just 1 knot. The pilot expertly managed these conditions, climbing the aircraft from an initial altitude of 1,005 feet above sea level to 1,782 feet in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The enroute climb phase was followed by a level cruise, which began 2 miles west of the island of Spiekeroog. During this phase, the aircraft maintained a steady altitude of 1,782 feet for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The pilot then initiated a descent, which took the aircraft from 1,663 feet to 406 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The flight continued with a series of enroute climbs and level cruises, each phase taking the aircraft to a new altitude and location. The pilot expertly managed the aircraft's altitude and airspeed, ensuring a smooth and efficient flight. The final approach to runway 28 at EDWG Wangerooge Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 276.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,277 feet above ground level.
The landing was made on runway 28, which has a length of 853 meters. The threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 55 knots, but the touchdown distance was good at 397 meters. The touchdown speed was also good at 51 knots, and the touchdown rate was perfect at -37 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 3.9 meters.
The total landing distance was 738 meters, which is 87% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centerline by 11.6 meters. Despite these minor deviations, the pilot successfully brought the aircraft to a stop, using a total of 30 kilograms of fuel during the flight. The total flight distance was 30 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 27 minutes.
The Cessna Skyhawk successfully landed at EDWG Wangerooge Airport, achieving a score of 89.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 276.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,277 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the local weather conditions.
The temperature at the time of landing was 16°C, with a wind speed of 12 knots at 329°. This resulted in a crosswind of 10 knots and a headwind of 7 knots. Despite these conditions, the pilot managed to maintain control of the aircraft and execute a smooth landing. The threshold speed was slightly below the target at 55 knots, but the touchdown distance of 397 meters was good, and the touchdown speed of 51 knots was also within acceptable limits.
One of the notable aspects of this landing was the perfect touchdown rate of -37 feet per minute (fpm). This indicates that the pilot was able to control the aircraft's descent and touch down smoothly, without any excessive deceleration or acceleration. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.9 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the crosswind or other factors.
The total landing distance of 738 meters was 87% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot was able to execute a precise and controlled landing, minimizing the amount of runway required to come to a stop. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 11.6 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the pilot's reaction to the crosswind or other factors.
Overall, the Cessna Skyhawk's landing at EDWG Wangerooge Airport was a success, with the pilot demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and landing phases. While there were some minor deviations from the ideal, the overall score of 89.7% indicates a high level of proficiency and skill.
